Surfside Weeded Bad

For those planning a trip down to the Surfside beach tomorrow, I would consider another plan. Tons of weed and it stinks bad.

We went to fish out of surf side yesterday. Waves were too rough to fish but we did get some great sailing in...man the AI is a tank and handled the waves phenomenally. We could have trolled but too much seaweed was out all over.

I think it is good stuff. I have caught lots of trout around these sargassum mats. When left on the beach, it really helps to build it up and stop the wind from blowing all the sand away. Not to mention the fish you can find around it offshore. It will make long-rodding impossible, but we are yak fishing here.

Try showing kids all the marine life in the weed mats. Pick up a bunch of it in the water, and shake it out onto the wet sand or into a bucket. It is full of shrimp, crabs, nudibranchs, pipefish, seahorses, and sargassum fish. Really cool stuff, and they are all perfectly adapted to camoflauge in the weed.

It's really amazing how much of an ecosystem this stuff is. There's so much life in there, it's like they're floating islands. My kids love the stuff and always look forward to what I can find in it. Glad I'm not the only person who appreciates that sorta thing!

If Galveston gets spackled like Surfside, ya'll won't be taking the kids to the beach unless you want to watch them blow chow. The weed is three feet deep and it really reeks. All that marine life is now rotting.

I'll still take it over the dirty diaper and bud light can spackling I see on E. Beach.

Birds get to eat really well on those critters that wash up so I doubt much goes to waste. But still, stay off of Galveston beaches, all that weed has them really nasty. No fish either.

Looks to be a big pile stacked up in Matagorda just by looking at the beach cam. Kinda hard to get a good look though... someone needs to give the camera lens a spit shine. I hate the stuff, but my dogs love it. They think it's like some huge loofah while they roll in it.

Yeah, weed is still pretty bad down here worst south of bob hall.
