When and where will the Texas Striper run start

Post by mcgeed1 »

Greetings to all y'all TKF fresh water yakers, I have been a salty dog yaker for 12 yrs and hear lots of great things about the Feb-March striper run. I would love to give it a try, anyone willing to offer a few details I would be grateful. I am also willing to tag along, if anyone might extend an invitation.

Idk about the striper run but the white bass run is starting now. Its a little slow now but it only gets better. The white bass go up the creeks and rivers to spawn and they bite on just about anything. Try any place with bright colored plastics like chartreuse and white or anything lol. if you go, you will find them or other people fishing for them that will help you with some info.

Being in San Antonio, im guessing your local body of water is Canyon Lake? If so, it will still be another month or so before its full on. The striper and whites will be mixed in. Ill give you a holler if I get down there.

How do you want to catch them. Hitting them in the river might be tough this year witg water levels (on Texoma). But timing will be important too. I'd target them on the lake. Now is grest for yak fishing as the fish aren't moving fast chasing bait as when the water temps are a bit warmer. That said spring/fall can be a blast with topwater. Shoot me a PM if you want more info on hitting them in the rivers on Texoma. I've done it a few times on both the main rivers. Last two trips were slow, but we missed the window. Fun trip, but have to plan put in and take out points due to very limited access.

Vlaude I'd love to hear more about this. I fish near Denison Dam from the bank all the time, and just purchased my first yak (arrives in about 12 days, Pescador 12'). Would love to hear some good places on Texoma to kayak, preferably on the Texas side. Have you ever fished down below the dam?

Vlaude- I would be interested in doing some creek/river fishing around Texoma. Let me know when and where.

Aggieyak, yes I've spent a good number of hours on the red mostly below the dam and some above the lake and a bit on the Washita. If you have fished down there much i bet we might recognize each other, though i yak or fish the OK side 85% of the time when above the overflow to the dam. I prefer fishing the rivers, but I decide where to fish where I have the best chances for catching what I like to catch. Right now the lake is productive with a lot of 7-9lb fish. The 10lb+ fish aren't showing up every trip, but some of them. I think some of the guides might get a few of the larger ones as they typically have a lot more baits in the water than what I have and on the lake more. 3 trips ago we landed close to 50 fish in a 2+ hr window with a lot of 7-10lb fish. Trip after that we didn't catch quite as many but a good number and not one under 5lbs, good for catching but can only keep 2 that size or better. We released them all so no big deal I prefer the 18-20" fish for keepers anyways. I'm not on the dark side so no slimy bait here... [:D] I typically take my boat out this time of year, but looks like a couple of us might yak it this weekend. You'd be welcome to join us. We will be fishing the OK side because not everything in tejas is bigger as some believe. Looks like we'll probably deadstick them. Not my favorite, but it has been productive.

Congrats on the yak anyone is welcome to join us if we make it out this weekend, just pm me.

I have fished it a few times... The sandbass are much smaller on average compared to lakes in north central texas and Oklahoma. From my experiences anyways. Good numbers though and I'd say the chance at a striper is thw big plus in my book. Pretty area though and you can always bass fish if you want to change things up! I like the Pecos compared to the Devil's. Some deeper water from the mouth on the Rio. Been a few years since I've been down there though.
