Underwear, or no underwear... That is the question.
Underwear, or no underwear... That is the question.
When it comes to underwear, there is a lot of info on this site about cold weather gear, but not necessarily for warm weather.
I learned quickly that cotton briefs and kayaking in salt water don not mix. This is probably more than most need to know, but when I go out I wear a pair of Magellan pants with the built in mesh, but I'm not really a fan of the mesh. It's rough enough that sometimes it feels like I'm wearing sandpaper.
So I was at academy today and noticed Columbia makes "stay cool" briefs and it got me thinking....what does everyone else do? Does anyone wear breathable briefs? Would Columbia or Simms mesh pants be more comfortable? Is there something really cool out there that I don't even know about? (that's an old school reference )

Underarmour is standard gear when I head to the coast. I got
a few buddies that do the same.

cut the mesh out of all fishing pants, or suffer the consequences. Underarmor is the answer.

Cut the crotch out of the pants and go underless. Drys out fast.

Just like the others have stated. The first thing I do is cut out the mesh and don't leave home without the Under Armour. You can't beat them they give protection and dry fast.

C9 compression shorts at target
Long brief... Prevents chaffing and quick dry
Re: Underwear, or no underwear... That is the question.
I bought some cheap lycra shorts from Wal Marts due to the chafing on the inside of my legs using a Hobie Mirage drive. Salt water drys and leaves a fine sandpaper residue that grinds away skin.

Quick dry boxer-briefs from REI.
Same concept: tight fit, quick dry.

I just wear a pair of swim trunks underneath my Magellan pants. Both the trunks and the pants dry quickly, plus if I want to play in the water I can just take off the pants.

Definitely get rid of the mesh Manties they stick in men's water shorts and fishing pants!!! I have found that the plain old board shorts work best over a pair of synthetic compression shorts. UnderArmour is good. The new Columbia's look really nice and I am going to try them. But any compression pants will work. Up top, I prefer the Columbia long-sleeve pullover fishing shirts (Skiff Guide shirts or their "Freeze" shirts). A buff and a cap.
The other thing I do that I think saves you from Yak Ass, Bay Butt, and/or Beach Balls is getting out of those damp clothes ASAP! I always carry a dry change of cotton in my car. When I get in from the water and everything is loaded, I change clothes at the launch! I get butt naked and I put on all dry clothes!

x5 on the under armour undies. I always make sure to put these on and like GoinCoastal said a change on clothes at the launch makes for a much better ride home.

Reminds me of my days in the military playing around in the swaps and woods. You cut the mesh and free ball it that way you will never chaff or get a rash.

Re: Underwear, or no underwear... That is the question.
If I wear waders, I wear underwear. If it's Magellan pants/short, the mesh is fine by me.
Re: Underwear, or no underwear... That is the question.
Ok I like the idea of cutting out the manties...now for the ??? which style of under armour is usually worn ..sounds like a womans tea party gossip.
Re: Underwear, or no underwear... That is the question.
Get some nylon/spandex undies. I've got some ExOfficio's from REI and they are great. No chafing because they are slippery and they dry super fast. They're great for any active and/or wet sport (backpacking, etc.).
Re: Underwear, or no underwear... That is the question.
