Which action camera??

Post by Whiplash »

Watching all these videos peaked my interest. I was just curious what level of GoPro do you use? The Black edition sounds nice but is it worth the extra $100 for 1 more MP and 20 more pics per sec? Thanks for any info. I am not a camera guy so all that info is foreign to me.

Edit: Maybe I should have asked which camera everyone preferred. (GoPro, Sony Action Cam or the Contour, etc.)

I bought the silver, no wifi remote required. I can use my phone to turn it off/on and see a delayed live view through wifi also. From what I've heard it's not worth it unless you plan on making professional quality videos.

Edit: go to amazon.com and read reviews on each. I think there are a couple reviews that make comparisons between the 3 editions

Thanks, I will check it out. I don't need professional videos, but quality.

GO Pro is trash in my opinion. my GP Black always freezes up. I'll go with the Sony action cam.

That is what most of the reviews on Amazon were saying. They did say updating the Firmware fixed the freeze up problem.

I did the most recent update when I bought it, and it worked fine for awhile, but it still freezes up, and at times it just stops recording. I just found out that they have a more recent update. I hope this new one really fixes it.

Also contemplating the newer GP for BTB trips, etc. I scuba as well and these cases are holding up for several fellow divers to 125' +, my deepest scuba was 156 but I don't plan on GP'n that deep but also don't mind the fact the cases are that good. GP has a lot of accessories too.

Ton of reviews out there for the Sony, not familiar with it, quick glance didn't sound as good, no idea what their accessory range is like (Sony) let alone a waterproof case, but here's a great side by side comparison with the GP2.

I haven't had any issues with freezing, but I have had an issue with overheating.

I've been using it for a dashcam for the last couple months or so and this past Sunday it overheated and shut itself down (It was pretty hot to the touch too!). I let it cool down and retried but it just did it over again.

Of course, some forums I've read says its because I'm using an aftermarket battery (Wasabi Power?)... or the fact that it was on my dash in Texas heat/sun (with ac pumping cold). Anyone else have this issue, or possible fix other than taking it out of direct sunlight?

Keeping it oldschool with the gopro hero 2 pretty much the same as silver edition minus the wi-fi .only reason I went with the hero 2 it because academy had some on sale after christmas for $149.00 so I got one . I want to get a hero3 someday. Also a other great camera to use at a great price is a fuji xp20 it also shoots 14mp & true hd video I use it for distance shots its waterproof.shockproof.dustproof.freezeproof and under $150.00 just make sure you use a class ten / 32gig sandisk with both cameras

I'm considering this version, http://www.amazon.com/GoPro-HD-HERO2-Ou ... o2+hero+HD" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Also learned they are actually good to 197', that's pretty decent.

$248.95 on Amazon, w/free shipping. You'd have to really have some extra accessories, this Outdoor version comes with a good starter setup, or at least have a great price. PM me what you have if you're serious, to be fair to the poster this isn't a For-Sale section.

I have a Black and a White. I got the Black first. The 1 mp and 20 pics per second are not the main advantages to the Black in my opinion. It's the FPS. The Black edition has double the frames-per-second when shooting video of the White or Silver. Where this really matters (and where the Black really shines) is when doing slow-mos. Slowing down at 30 FPS gets real choppy, whereas at 60 FPS you can slow down a fish breaching the water or whatever you want VERY slowly and it will remain smooth and fluid.

Having said that, if budget is a concern, I think the White or Silver edition are great investments. I still run my black at 30 FPS to save battery life if I'm not filming a shot that I plan on slowing down. But it is nice to have the option, and still shots do look significantly better on the Black than the White, but the Silver is a very small step down from the Black in that regard.

Hope that helps.

I would encourage you to put a lot of thought and research into the mounting of whichever camera you end up choosing. You'll want to test it before you get out in the water to make sure it's convenient to grab, but also gets a good angle on whatever action you're trying to capture. You can certainly spend top dollar on a nice video camera, and end up with subpar results due to poor mounting. I think the people who use multiple cameras seem to get really good content to edit with. You could go with a pricey camera and back it up with a cheapie as a handheld. That way you don't have to struggle with unmounting / remounting your single camera when you want to shoot handheld. It's nice to have that freedom because there will be times when you might want to dunk the camera below the yak to capture the fish lurking there or document the last moments before you pull those fish out of the water.

For good research on mounts, cameras, etc. you ought to check out the gear forum on tkf. There's a lot more postings there on these topics than in BTB.

Have you check the Swann Freestyle hd? I got it like 3 weeks ago for $115 it comes with a remote control, case rated up to 70ft, back panel to watch recording, several bases to put it on, battery, etc..

Has 1080p with 135 view angle 30 fps
720p with 170 view angle 30 or 60 fps

During daytime is awesome, but at night the gopro is better.

For $115 at woot cant beat the price.

My brother and I just both purchased the ContourRoam with Watersports kit from Amazon for $115. Does not come with a memory card, so you will need to pick one up (between $17 - $30 for a 32GB Class 10 - UHS-1).

This model was discontinued by Contour, replaced by the Roam2. When both our cameras came, we were able to re-flash the latest firmware for the Roam2 into our Roam cameras. This gave us the 60fps capability at 720p resolution. The camera also came with a separate underwater case that is waterproof to 60 meters (approx. 180 feet).

So far, we have both been VERY pleased. We have both taken lots of bass fishing videos, and underwater videos of my kayak trolling motor in operation, underwater structure, and underwater fish releases.

Not an endorsement, just letting you know that this was a really affordable option and has given us both some great video. A wider field of view than my two year old $850 Sony camcorder, but video that is just as good. And great underwater video. Only drawback, is you lose most sound when in the waterproof case. The good part is the camera is waterproof by itself to 10 feet, and then the sound is fine. This means you can use the camera in the rain or shallow water without the waterproof case. It will not float without the waterproof case, but will float in the case (unless you attach a non-floating mount). One other drawback is no view monitor to see what you're shooting, but this has not been a huge problem for us because of the very wide field of view. Not good for far away shots though, and no zoom available.

Another vote for the Swanned Freestyle HD. I love the remote control and the standard tripod mount means anywhere I can get a 1/4" bolt I can mount my camera.

Was checking it out on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Swann-Freestyle-W ... eestyle+hd" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
, says it's good to 65' which is important to me, but the dimensions they give have to be for the box because it's 3.5 x 6 x 11 haha...thing is bigger than my 1991 Radio Shack hi-8mm video camera I had years ago.

Could you please measure the actual camera when you get a chance?

If I'm fishing freshwater or in the bay I use my video camera glasses http://hdvisionwear.com/, if I'm in the surf I use a jvc Adixxion. http://www.amazon.com/JVC-GC-XA1-Adixxi ... B008PEEZSQ.

The glasses are easy to use and it lets me keep my hands free to fish. I like the adixxion better than my go pro because it is waterproof without a case and has a screen/wifi built in.

I use a Hero 2...and i love it...

ive noticed from other action cameras that they can get blocky with quick movements or slow motion gets distorted....i love my go pro but i have never had issues with it like the others apparently.....

good thing is there is more help out there for the go pro from other people than other action cams...however support from GP kind of sucks o ive heard

Thanks for posting about the ContourRoam. I like the flexibility of it working at ten feet without the case or super deep with the case. I might keep my eye on that one as a future purchase. Heck, it would be fun to just attach to the anchor to see what comes around on the bottom!
