Outboard motor on PA

Post by Skunked2manyX »

Whenever I get some extra cash I would like to rig my PA with an outboard motor like the attached video. Has anyone done this who/where can I get the custom work done?

If you do mount the motor on you PA, show the build so others (me) might learn how. Also remember you will have to get TX numbers then.

There has been alot of discussions on the long term damage to yaks from using outboards on them. If you want an outboard on a boat why not just buy a cheap Jon boat and not worry about damaging your PA.

Won't work offshore or in waves over 1 ft. The PA has a heavy bow and it plows into waves in any speeds over 2.5 mph.
As the bow plows into these waves it tosses water up and over the bow and into the cockpit.

I had an electric motor on my PA and in anything over 1 ft, I couldn't go over 2.5 mph without the above happening.

Awesome Mythman that's why I like this site you guys know alot regarding these Kayaks. I am just a newbie and thought the 2.5hp outboard would help moving across the bay quickly to find the fishies. Oh well it looked cool!

Outboard motor on PA

Post by mpg2yahoo »

I think on the bay it would be fine for most days, but BTB its a different story. I would suggest a trolling motor cuz the 2.5 can be $800 investment. A 30# trolling you can get for $100 new. Unless you want to do long trips and don't have to worry on battery charge.

I have thought to put a trolling through the mirage drive hole instead. People use this plastic to put the trolling into that area.

Well ... not just any trolling motor will fit through the mirage drive opening .... just not wide enough. I have seen on the internet to some motors will ................ does anyone know for sure what brand/model trolling motor will fit in the mirage drive opening?? That is the first thing before you start modifying the plug. Forget a 3 blade prop .. you have to use a 2 blade but still most of the motor housings have too large a diameter to fit without completely Cramming it through and risking damage to the hull much less being able to pull it back out in a hurry. I have a shortened shaft 30# Saltwater MinnKota that will not fit.

Putting an outboard motor on a kayak makes about as much sense as buying a bay boat and paddling it around. Like Justin mentioned just buy a jon boat.
TD this guy has been selling these trolling motors that fit the mirage drive for years on ebay. Don't know anything more about them. I enjoy the workout that pedaling all day provides :cat:

I agree with Larry. I'm getting a yak to get away from the noise, fuel bills and maintenance. As far as putting a trolling motor on a PA, Hobie makes one specifically for their Mirage drive yaks. It is very expensive, but it is purpose built for that yak. Torqueedo makes a cool one, but it is expensive as well.

Hell yeah they are expensive! $2500-3000... As much as the PA itself.

If you want the trolling from the start just get the torquedo.

I think as you want to reach places not accessible to a normal yak due to distance you start to think on a motor.

I happened to have fished with both of them. One is PA 12 & the other PA 14. Very nice and they even take them BTB at SPI !
FYI,Yes they do have them registered TX #
