Sunday McFaddin report

Post by Asherb »

Hit the water around 9:00am when the fog started to burn off the water. Paddled to 10' and started off slow. I believe it was FlounderGuru who had made it out first and he slayed them all day.
After one hour with only one bull red to show for it we moved in a little closer to a color change and picked up a few more. Bite slowed down a bit mid day. After about 45 minutes of nothing my reel starts screaming. Lock it down and set the hook and whatever's on the line is unfazed. Continues to peel line off so I unhook from my anchor and go for a not so far sleigh ride. Reall just took me in a big circle. He seemed glued to the bottom but after about a 10 minute fight I finally get a glimpse of him. Definitely a shark! A little more fighting and get him to the surface and it was a big headed bull shark. Then while trying to bring him to the side of the yak he bites right through my leader. Just an 80lb mono piece with a frayed end! No pics but I had blast n cast as a (paid) :D witness.
Made it back to our anchors and the bull reds started biting. Picked up 6 more reds before heading back in. Awesome day and I'll have my revenge on that big bully.

Congrats on a good day of fishing.

That first pic looks like it was really rough at that time.

Today was the best bull red fishing I've experienced at McFaddin.

Stocked up on 12 lbs of mullet (was expecting a gafftop to redfish ratio of 10:1 haha) and made my way to McFaddin Beach. I was the first to launch around 7:45 AM and paddled to about 12 feet of water. It was a little foggy but not too bad. The colder air temps felt great. I noticed a crowd of people growing on the beach and most were waiting... lol. I was by myself on the water for about a hour. By the time the first group of kayakers anchored near me, I was landing my 10th bull red. which was part of the 3rd double for the day.

The bite was steady in 12 feet so I never moved. The colder weather must have pushed the gafftop to deeper water or something, only caught 2 slimers during this trip. As the sun warmed up the water by around 9:30 AM, the shad started popping all around me and every few minutes of soaking bait resulted in a bull red.

All of my mullet was depleted by noon. The longest lull in the action was about 15 minutes. After tallying up my catches, I ended the morning with 37 bull reds and a total of 13 doubles landed. And yes my arms and back are very sore, but the good kind of sore.

Highlights of the day were:

Bull Red with about 25 spots on each side

Way to go FlounderGuru, 37 BRs is one awesome day on the water. Man if I wasn't committed for tomorrow I'd be calling in sick right now. I guess you are giving the flatties a rest now and picking on BRs. You spanked us all with the awesome reports with pics of blanket flounder so now it's the reds. MythMan watch out this guy is a fishing machine, 37 BRs in one day it wouldn't take him long to catch you. That's if you stayed home that is.

I'll agree with all great day for BR's. A few more pics of the day. I cut it short after a BR decided to snap the tip off my rod. Nice thing I get to upgrade for a new rod and the wife was happy I was home before dinner for once.

This is awesome, I am glad you boys found them in the same numbers we did. Long live MCFADDIN!

Were there huge schools of reds running through busting up bait and what not?

I didn't see any schools busting bait on the surface or close to the beach although conditions were a little rougher than when yall hammered them. The surf zone wasn't bad, just little 1-2' spilling waves. However, further offshore there was 2-3' short period waves all morning long since the wind shifted to ENE. All of the fish I caught were either on the bottom or suspended a few feet from the bottom.
