Stir crazy
Stir crazy
The weather, my work load and a short bout with a virus have all conspired to keep me off the water. I spent last night and very early this morning tearing down reels and changing out hooks on baits. I had already re-organized my tackle box and wading box. So I am ready, but now Thanksgiving is upon us. Maybe an early trip in the morning? (Maybe??) I got an itch I cant scratch.
So I'm driving to a job site this morning with the windows cracked for some fresh air and I get a strong whiff of what I swear is a trout slick - right there near the corner of San Felipe and Kirby
So now I'm just flat out losing my mind.

Re: Stir crazy
I can relate; this has been the least fishingest year for me in a long, long time. I was oh, so ready for this Goose Island trip, and it's been cold, wet, and windy since we got here.

Re: Stir crazy
OK, Yaklash, I'll make you feel good.
I've been retired now for over eleven years. My profession in retirement became full time fishing guide (I can never find fish), fly fishing instructor, (no one pays me, so I do it for free) and bone fish hunter in Mexico (Ascension bay is my paradise on this earth). PACK trips were on my schedule at least twice a month, and my evolvement with HOW gave me much more than I gave.
Since January of this year, I have been beset with PMR (poly maligia rheumatic) a most debilitating muscular inflamation. I cannot even pick up my kayak with assistance. Haven't been on the bay waters in too long.
Talk about an itch that I can't scratch! So, don't fret about missing a few fishing trips. This too shall end, and our frequent fishing trips will, once again, be an integral part of our daily activitiy.

Re: Stir crazy
I hear you. I have a job so I can fish, but I can't fish because I have this dang ole job!
Like the saying goes, when you're young you have all the time in the world but no money, and then you get a job and you have money but no time!
I did manage to get off a little early today though. Made a beeline for ANWR. Water was CRYSTAL clear by the boat ramp spot and I didn't see a single sign of baitfish activity in the 2 hours I got to wade before sundown. It was my first time to that particular walk-in spot so it was good to feel around the bottom a bit at least.
I thought just being in the water would scratch my itch but now I'm just mad at em! I'll probably sneak in an early wade tomorrow too. I just don't know where after today's little adventure.

Re: Stir crazy
sounds like you need to get out there. Make time Thanksgiving morning, your family will understand the need. After all it for the good of your mental health.
Re: Stir crazy
For many years, one of my best friend's family (men only) had a tradition of a Thanksgiving morning goose hunt. We'd be back by lunch time with a pile of breast meat and gizzards. It evolved into a Thanksgiving morning flounder trip. Once our generation started getting married & having kids, that tradition died, mainly because of the wives of our generationJimbo! wrote:sounds like you need to get out there. Re: Stir crazy
Guess I've got the same strain of stir crazy you guys have. Each time I head out into the garage, first thing I see is survey tape flagging hanging from the bottom of the yak (keeps us from bumpin' our forheads on the underside)....I look at the yak, take a deep breath and say, "I know, I know...." Been falling asleep counting reds, trout, and flatties!
Think I'll sooth the itch by visiting Academy on Friday....I'll be looking for some Paul Brown fat boys to add to my bag of goodies.
Happy Thanksgiving mates!

I know how you feel. When my work schedule gets crazy during summer I can go a month without fishing so I'll occasionaly sneak out for a night trip in the lights and get home by midnight so I can be at work the next morning

Re: Stir crazy
According to my fishing log, I haven't been on the water since 10-24, a month ago!
That may be the longest time without fishing I have gone in the past 8 years.
I am pretty sure I will be on the water this Monday!

Re: Stir crazy
Likewise. I would go floundering Sunday (Dec 1), but have to meet a client who can only meet on weekends. Monday! Fingers crossedMythman wrote:I am pretty sure I will be on the water this Monday!

Took me three days, but I finally made it to Academy this evening. Checked out the new store at Hwy 6 and Westheimer (Houston). Confirmed....they have the Paul Brown Fat Boys. Pricey rascals!! Shy of 8 bucks each. They have a good variety of both Original and Fat Boys.
I'll prbably buy several....SOON.

What was their price on the original Corkys?NamVetSwiftie wrote:Took me three days, but I finally made it to Academy this evening. Checked out the new store at Hwy 6 and Westheimer (Houston). Corky led the charge to the $5 baits so long ago, but if you ever saw Paul's shop and watched him make them, it was understandable. What I assumed when Mirrolure bought him out and started mass-producing them south of the border was that the price would stay the same or rise just slightly. But corporations think differently than I do. But trout don't tear them up too bad (at least not compared to redfish), so you'll have them a long time.
Warning: be careful when replacing hooks. Be sure to get the same size and weight of hook. It DOES affect the sink rate. A guide I know puts heavier hooks on them in the late spring so he can work them faster.

I'll take another look when I drop by again, however, their web site shows the following:Yaklash wrote:What was their price on the original Corkys?NamVetSwiftie wrote:Took me three days, but I finally made it to Academy this evening. Paul Brown's Original Series Corky 3-5/8" Suspending Jerk Bait, $2.88 -$7.99. The Fat Boys are listed at $7.99.
I'll post up when I confirm. At least MirrOlure left the packageing with Paul Brown's name on the packaging.

Yes but I don't know what they're asking for them. I have so many in my tackle box I don't look at them in the store.NamVetSwiftie wrote:Visited Gander Mountain and they don't carry them.

Heavier hooks on a corky....that's a great idea. I need to try that to a couple of mine in the spring.Yaklash wrote:

The men in my family go on a duck hunt every Thanksgiving morning. The women just expect it, and even encourage us to go.Yaklash wrote:For many years, one of my best friend's family (men only) had a tradition of a Thanksgiving morning goose hunt.
