Re: my new portable bed
Killer set up. I have two, one for me and one for my brother. I prefer the one made from aluminum in the frame. Does not fold up as small but is more sturdy. Both fit in our Jeep Wrangler. Last time I camped out on Padre Island with just a inflatable mattress and sleeping bag on the sand I kept getting small bites from insects. Then I remembered some of the stories from Billy Sandifer involving coyotes and moved to the roof of my Jeep.
First thing I did when I got back home was order a tent cot from Kamp Rite. Never looked back since.

Re: my new portable bed
looks like it would keep the 'skeeters' out and you wont have to mess with the mattress...cool
Re: my new portable bed
I have one. Last time I went camping I was totally set up and drinking a beer while others were still pounding tent stakes in to the sand. Of course I helped set up other people's stuff with my non-beer hand.
Re: my new portable bed
I bought an air mattress, can't have too much comfort.
Re: my new portable bed
I would also check out the Cabela's version of the tent-cot.
http://www.cabelas.com/product/Cabelas- ... l+Products" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I did a side-by-side comparison of Cabelas vs Kamp rite and thought the Cabela's version was more comfortable.
Anyway, my .02 cents.

another brand but this one allows you to peg down

Re: my new portable bed
man thats awesome! I was eyeballing one at gander mountain, but like all of gander mountain's stuff it was over priced.
Re: my new portable bed
Im working on a homemade camper shell that my kayak sits under with lights, windows and exhaust fan. No set up needed, park on the beach crawl in the back. I'll post up pics when it starts to look like something besides a frame.
Figured a truck topper is between $1200-$1800 and I don't want it on the truck all the time. I think this will come out to about $400 once Im all done.

Re: my new portable bed
Jack, have you tried it yet?
Re: my new portable bed
the tent-cot has arrived
I've set it up and taken it down once
it takes a little longer and is a little more complicated than it looks
the tent and the cot are separate pieces, which is a good thing
it took me about 15'mins to set it up after I looked at the photo instructions
and about 10'mins to take it down and put it in it's bag
I like it, it's built very well
more pics to come
here are the instructions

Re: my new portable bed
I took it out into the yard and timed the setup & tear down again
it took 7'mins to setup the cot and attach the tent
then another 1.5'mins to attach the rainfly
and 10'mins to tear it down and put it back in the bag
so real numbers are around 10'mins for both the setup & tear down
it is very comfortable and I'm 6'5/270#

here it is in it's bag in the trunk of my Honda Accord
it has plenty of room for at least two of them, and gear

Re: my new portable bed
bigeddie58 got one the year before last and he loves it. It's not as comfortable as my fifth wheel RV but it's a whole lot more affordable, portable, and you get better gas mileage hauling it. If I was still single I'd have one.
Re: my new portable bed
YouTube has some good video of the tent cot.

Re: my new portable Dog House (bed) ;)
I bought the Kamp-Rite "Oversize" Tent Cot with Alum. frame and Rain Fly several years ago and have used it 5 or 6 times .. love it so far for it's quick set up off of the ground. Yours folds up smaller and you are a whole lot bigger than I am. I use a good Thermo-Rest self inflating mattress as extra cushioning. Works great .... I have so many different tents
including one that fits in the bed of my Avalanche and you can go in and out of the truck interior and run the A/C if needed (haven't even used it yet in 3 yrs.
) ..... Tent Cot is best for the money and versatility though IMHO

Re: my new portable Dog House (bed) ;)
another option for a solo tent on a cot
if you buy a Paha Que Bear Creek Solo Tent
it is designed to be used on top of a cot
it's other advantage for us on the coast is it is full mesh for breathability on a summer night
it's floor area is 86"x32" and it only weighs 3½#

it will fit perfectly on the Grizzly / Big Bear Cot
which is 84"x32" x9" off the ground and only weighs 8#
and packs down to 36"x7"x4"

total weight of the tent & the cot= 12#
and will be around ~ 36"x7"x7" together in a pack bag
I've had a pair of the BIG cots for around 15 years, for our larger car camping tent
and they are Debbie approved
as long as the battery powered ceiling fan is in the tent

Re: my new portable Dog House (bed) ;)
well, after thinking about it, I sent the KampRite tent cot back and ordered the all mesh Paha Que Bear Creek Solo Tent. it will be cooler than the other model and it will pack much smaller, and weighs less than half what the KampRite model does. & it will be easy to use in my kayak.
