Anchor Pole
I recently purchased the Hobie pro Angle 12 and I wanted to get a 10 ft anchor pole for it but when I looked online they are like 50-70 dollars! Does anybody have a good idea for making them. I know some people use pvc but I find that to bendy.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: Anchor Pole
Christmas tree light hanger for the house, got it on clearance for $10 and it extends from 4ft to 20ft I believe. It's metal and hasn't rusted yet, though I don't use it in saltwater.
Though I believe this light pole could be even better.

Re: Anchor Pole
look at fiberglass fencepost poles from Tractor Supply or other farm supply house. Commonly used for electric fencing. 3/8" diameter and 48" long is what I saw online. Likely won't find anything longer than 4' on the shelf, but you might. I'm looking at using that. Then using some large diameter shrink wrap for a handle to keep the 'glass fibers out of my fingers. I've seen where guys put PVC pipe caps or fittings over the end to tie a tether to it. Should already come with a pre-sharpened point.
I know they make a larger diameter/longer pole because I have a good friend who uses them on his fence. But I would suspect they are a special order item. Thought about using a fiberglass shovel handle or the like, but not sure they would be any cheaper than ordering a fiberglass pole. Plus the handles are hollow where the fiberglass fenceposts are solid.

I bought an aluminum telescoping hiking pole from Academy for $15. Pull the rubber cap off the bottom and the tip is pointed. Fully extended, it is 4.5ft long and breaks down to about 26 inches to fit in my crate.

Research "Horse Fence Poles" in the web. Lots of choices there.

Re: Anchor Pole
Alright folks, here comes my dumb question of the day. Since these are telescoping, how do you stick them down far enough to hold you still? Won't it collapse back into itself when you jam it down? I've only used a solid rod & I typically jam that sucker down. I'd love to ditch my anchor and use a 10' pole instead.Mighty Z wrote:I bought an aluminum telescoping hiking pole from Academy for $15. Re: Anchor Pole
You know your right, even if you can twist and lock the telescopic pole down, it will eventually collapse. I am making one out of 3/4 " pvc, about 8ft, putting a t handle out of pvc and I will insert a dowel rod for added strength, now I got to figure out how to make the point. It's in the works.weekendyakker wrote:Alright folks, here comes my dumb question of the day. Since these are telescoping, how do you stick them down far enough to hold you still? Re: Anchor Pole
Here is a picture of mine I have had for 4 yrs. I have made about 20 stix sold to our local LLM kayak group. Had a request from two of them that wanted an 8ft stake out stix for their Chiquita boats in order to make the freight worth it I ordered 5 stake outs in 6 footers once they r gone they r gone
They come with a handle, 3ft of rope and a sea-doo nylon clip and a measuring tape affixed to stix!
They r uv protected and will not splinter.

Re: Anchor Pole
I wondered about the telescoping hiking poles collapsing as well. Then I realized that they are used for hiking and if they collapsed, it would be a huge liability for the manufacturer. Been using them for 2 years and not a single issue.

Re: Anchor Pole
Your thought is correct. In order for them to collapse you have to hold the lower sections and twist while compressing.Mighty Z wrote:I wondered about the telescoping hiking poles collapsing as well. Re: Anchor Pole
Once you get sand grit in there and after a few outings it will wear out the aluminum and plastic shims. Key is to was well and remove sand /grit prior to collapsing.H2O Seeker wrote:Your thought is correct. Seen this even in aluminum paddles when they r not cleaned.

Re: Anchor Pole
Well, that makes more sense. I was thinking more on the lines of how an old antenna collapses. How the heck could anyone use something like that. HAHA! Thanks for the insight.H2O Seeker wrote:Your thought is correct. Re: Anchor Pole
Zman - do you mind sharing what you are using for the handle on your stake out pole. Don't get your way at all so its DIY for me. If you don't want to share no worries. The pic of the hiking pole made me think about a bicycle handlebar grip. Thanks!
Re: Anchor Pole
I'm building one that I want to use as both an anchor & push pole as well (for whenever I get my SOT/SUP Hybrid Kayak).
The material is mainly PVC and a wooden dowel (for added strength).
Length is about 10 feet.
It's very similar to other DIY anchor poles, but I'm making some additions (a sort of parallel leash with waist band to avoid losing it if I drop it when I'm standing up, but gives slack if you have to reach far to push or just want it out of your way).
I'll see if I can post some pics later.
