Cali Cat Yakers Report 19 AUG 2016

Post by Remus »

Castin4Fish and I hit the water around 0700 still dark and with plenty fresh bait caught in the pond next to the kayak launch. We made it to the 181 Cove and almost immediately Castin4Fish caught a nice 3 lbs Channel and then his reel bent and the fight was on. A monster Blue Catfish was dragging him around and all I could hear was Mike saying "Oh Shit...Oh Shit. A huge 12 lbs Blue Catfish was at the end of his fishing line not wanting to come aboard without a fight. Eventually Mike wrestled the fish into the kayak. He caught another 4-5 good size catfish that filled his ice chest to capacity. It turned out to be one the best fishing days I had in a long time. Nothing beats fishing with good company.

Luckily my trolling motor on the other side helped with counter weight. Somewhat anyway.
I know filling my ice chest sounds a bit greedy, but I did let more go than kept. This was my first haul since last fall and the neighbors keep asking for fish. Remus and I decided next time we will target rickr's favorite displaced salt water fish. Guides were tearing them up around us. It was a good day. Oh and btw Remus caught and released many fish also. Thanks Remus for the company and pics n video.

Jimbo I agree. Mike was using my old rusty scale. I believe that the fish was close to 20 lbs.

Ah, that explains it!
And Mike, don't feel guilty about keeping any fish. The way I see it, as often as I get to fish I won't make a drop in a bucket with how many fish I keep.
If anyone should practice catch and release it's those guides who are trying to run you over out there! :x

RickR,

I don't know for sure but I may be able to go on Friday 2 SEP I'll let you know.

I totally agree with you. Weekdays are quiet and peaceful.

BTW: I know CPR, got you covered.

Thanks Remus, I put it on my calendar. Might even go out this Friday. I haven't had my yak out in more than a year now and left the hatch off to prevent condensation, while under a tarp, in the back yard. Just finished cleaning out about a gallon bucket of Pecan Shells....Dang Squirrels. At least they didn't chew up my Fish Finder wiring. Got to have that FF to locate the old Cali Cat hole....

Sure will miss iron shore's fish counting abilities. Poor old Ron had back surgery last month and won't be able to be out and about till Oct/Nov.

Mike, you need to invest in a scale. That Blue, my friend, is closer to 25# Isn't he about the size of that 30 you caught a while back?

What's up with all these back surgeries? I had back surgery last October and haven't had my kayak in the water for close to a year now and I'm going to have to have another back surgery pretty soon when the VA can figure out a date.
Looks like my kayak fishing days are still on hold for a while longer.
At least I can watch the reports guys!

Dummy me I had a digital scale in my kayak box on my trailer but wanting to get home in a hurry I forgot. Judge for yourself. Aug 2016 and OCT 2015. Oct cat weighed 30#. Need to get out on Fridays more often. It was quiet other than guides passing buy which never bothered us. They stay away from the hole with their down-riggers for some reason  Cant make Friday the 2nd since I gottta dove hunting excursion. Would like to hit Saturday with Yakdat but have to mow my three acres of grass burs since the rain enhanced their growth. Hopefully be back out soon.

Ron, I check the board from time to time. I retired in June and bought a boat. I take the kayak out to run the Medina or Guadalupe but that's about it. I hadn't been on Boerne lake this year. I have been thinking about running north to LBJ or Inks and do some striper catching..
