Sea Rim BTB - Friday 7th

Post by Mythman »

A few of us are planning a BTB fishing trip to Sea Rim this next Friday the 7th of Oct. We will be targeting bull reds and sharks. Lately the fishing has been on fire there.

Condition predictions are for 0.6 surf with 1 ft offshore waves............winds 10 mph or less.

If interested in joining, post up and we will include you on time and launch place.

My suggestion is an early start...........the last three trips the fish have been biting like crazy early then seem to slow down.

Unfortaunaltely work is in the way, however I will fish vicariously through y'all and wait patiently on the report and photos. At least y'all will not have me to drag down the average number of BR per person. Safe travels and tight lines.

PS. Anyone leaving west side of Houston should leave 30 earlier that you plan. Traffic has been terrible the last several weeks and I was in traffice all the way till Buccee's.

I wonder what it is about Sea Rim that doesn't jive with the rest of the coast. MSW reports high surf and swells for most of the coast due to Matthew, but not for that area.

I hope to be there by 7 am and launch by 7:30 am.

Directions from Winnie are Hwy 73 to Port Arthur, hwy 82 to hwy 87 and take hwy 87 to end of road. 75 yds from end of road turn at the marked "Beach Entrance" (two dumpsters at the turn in) and when you hit the beach turn right and drive 3/4 mile down to the white sign in the sand dunes. I see no reason to move the location when we been catching so many fish at this spot.

Bait of choice for me will horse mullet (can not be over 12 inches from Oct 1 to Feb 28th). Some people use crabs, too. You can also use pogies and/or whiting.

Will only be fishing 100-250 yds. off the beach............no long paddles here.

Looking forward to a stellar day of fishing!

Google the gulf coast shoreline. The McFadden Beach is in a semi 'cove'. It is also protected from the prevailing easterly current by Texas Point & the Sabine Jetties.

As a family with 10 kids we seined that beach very often. LOL The hot spot was at the cow pens, a place that had been dredged to load cattle barges.

If it matters to anyone, you guys are launching at McFadden. You can only enter Sea Rim through a gate. East of the Sea Rim Park is deep silt & very difficult to wade.

Good luck

All of the above is true..............however, kayakers have called that part of the beach (byMcFadden Wildlife Refuge) "Sea Rim" forever and I'm not going to change. McFadden is commonly referring to the West part of the refuge close to High Island.

"Sea Rim" conditions, where I plan on fishing, is always about half of the conditions predicted for HI/McFadden.

Whatever floats your boat friend. LOL

It was McFaddin Beach until a portion was set aside for Sea Rim in 1977.

Interesting history -

<<With twenty miles of beach front, the [McFaddin]ranch contained extensive wetlands, now included in the 14,000-acre Sea Rim State Park, the 42,000-acre McFaddin National Wildlife Refuge, qqv and 8,500 acres of the 12,000-acre J. D. Murphree Wildlife Management Area. Ownership of the ranches was in the McFaddin Trust from 1928 to 1948. After the trust dissolved, the separate holdings were still run as a unit until the sale of all but a few scattered tracts between 1951 and 1979 ended a century and a half of McFaddin family ranching in Southeast Texas.>>

Thanks for the history. I love learning the history of the places we fish. It sometimes helps me find fish, especially when it has to do with old rigs and structure underwater.

Does anyone know if there are posts or a gate blocking vehicle travel from eastern Sea Rim State Park heading east towards Texas Point?

If I can get all my work done in enough time to load the kayak before it gets too late I'll be hitting Sea Pony just after 6 then get on over to Sea Rim.

Yes it is blocked off to vehicle traffic at the east side of Sea Rim.

Dang the timing stinks, I'll be in the hill country with the grandkids and won't be back till Sunday . Then I turn around and head to Del Rio (Devils River) for 5 days. It won't be BTB but it will be on a kayak so I don't feel so bad. I hope you tear them up .

If like the past, in similar areas, perhaps thru October and part of November.

Sea Rim allowed vehicle traffic on its west beach, up to its boundary fence. The fence divided Sea Rim from McFaddin. The fence is just a stone throw to the east of the McFaddin beach access road, where the dumpsters are. Zoom in on google maps and you can see the fence.

The fence once had numerous signs delineating the two beaches.

Beaumont Enterprise
At the west boundary of Sea Rim State Park and McFaddin Beach, what was once a dune covered beach, now is flat due to Hurricane Ike's storm surge. Dave Ryan/The Enterprise

Per google, Sea Rim Beach has 5 miles of shoreline and McFaddin 20. You can imagine the problems of the coast guard on a moonless night searching for you on the wrong beach.

You cant drive across Sea Rim on the beach, but a few miles east of its entrance is 1 or 2 roads that lead to the beach. They may have once been private roads, but I think a developer is selling lots now.

This part of the beach is closer to the marsh and we use to catch boatloads of shrimp in that area.

What kind of sharks are being caught at Sea Rim? Are they being caught on mullet as well?
