DIY no-power pole
DIY no-power pole
Ola! Anybody seen Bernie's River Stick? It's sort of a power pole set up, with no power. A rope and pulley to pick up the "stick," a mount that holds it, and that's about it. It just falls down when released, no real downward force to hold it.

I'm thinking about building one like it, but where I fish is generally too rocky for any penetration on the bottom. I have a hard time believing a setup like that would hold... Don't know. Anyone tried it, or something similar?
I was thinking about rigging it with 2 ropes and pulleys so I could torque it down as well as pick it up. May be unnecessary, might not work at all. I'm thinking of how the Micro Power Pole torques down, and am just skeptical. Any insight before I start drilling holes??

Re: DIY no-power pole
I got a great anchor system i borrowed from another kayaker here in these forums. He posted a video on you tube with it. A simple plumbing valve, PVC and an 8' fiberglass tree stake.
Here is the link to my setup itht he info to the stake out pole...http://www.texaskayakfisherman.com/foru ... 3&t=236221

That's pretty cool. I actually saw that one, or a similar one on youtube. Does it hold in high winds without the downward pressure I'm worried about? I have a design in mind I guess I'm just going to try.

Re: DIY no-power pole
It works well in shallow with winds to 15 mph and in 3' or deeper water winds at 10 mph. This is to make sure I do not keep getting pushed around by wind and damaging the scupper. I also put some electric tape around the PVC attached to valve that I put in the scupper to make it a tight fit and not slip out when i pull it up.
If the wind is high I can simply remove the pole from the valve and stick in mud outside of yak and tie off. It drops fast when you turn the knob on valve and it buries in the mud. If you need more anchor just push the pole in more. It is easy to pull it up most of the time. Sometimes after sitting in mud for a long period it sinks and is slow and tough to pull out but I can do it without turning around. I put my hands over my head and pull up on the stake and it comes out with some pulling. This would be hard using a rope tied to the pole as it might not be able to pull it out with just the rope. That's my opinion. Good luck!

Re: DIY no-power pole
Looks cool and easy but I think it has too much hardware just for an anchor.
Re: DIY no-power pole
I did see that one a while back. I tend to agree with kickingback. Looks like too much stuff. But I appreciate the suggestion.WC53 wrote:Have you seen this one

Re: DIY no-power pole
user "kickingback" posted his build and so I "think" I've improved it by using better sized materials:

I missed this the 1st time - great ideas guys.

I've messed with my anchor and rope almost for the very last time. It was so nice using this system...fast, easy and out of the way.Chubs wrote:I missed this the 1st time - great ideas guys.

Good video and good instructions! Jeff Bonham on YouTube had the original idea/video.
