Hobie MD180 drive exploded

Post by deptrai »

This is from my 2017 Outback.

What parts do I need to fix this and are there any dealers in the Houston area that I might be able to buy them from? The Hobie website shows a place called Fishing Tackle Unlimited. Doesn't sound like a kayak shop to me.

FTU is a Hobie Dealer. I know they have some parts in stock at the Katy Freeway, location but the Gulf Freeway location is larger so maybe they can help. I don't know if they have a repair shop on site, however. You should give them a call.

Wow, I have the same mirage drive. If you don’t mind to post your fix on this forum for the rest of us to learn. Like where or how to get the parts. Or any pot holes to watch out. Thank you

Open Saturday 9-7 so I intend to go into the Gulf Freeway store with my broken Hobie drive. Might as well, because I sure can't go kayak fishing this weekend.

Hobies have their issues no doubt. Most of their drives are solid. Unfortunately that 2017 drive is known for having issues.

Personally I would move on from that 2017 drive and try to buy another drive unit (2021 and newer have kick up fins). Check with as many Hobie dealers as you can. Sometimes they have spare drives they can sell you at a discount (or at least that was the case pre-covid).

Hobie said my 2017 V1 booms should fit into the V2 spine so I have ordered a new one. Should be here Friday.

My buddy Steve had a new 2018 Mirago 180 that came apart on him.

he basically learned you're really not supposed to honk on these; that is, you can put a lot more load through your legs than the drive was designed to sustain.
