Knocking Off the Rust

Post by karstopo »

It’s been so long I can’t remember the last time I fished.

Hey, but it was still fun.

I know what yer talking about. I went out last Wednesday and caught a short Red, a couple of big Hardheads, and a beautiful 19" flounder. It REALLY hurt to have to cut that one loose. My kayak's loaded and if I can carve a path through the morning fog, I'm gonna try to bag a few just after first light.
Thanks for the report. Hope I can reciprocate. TexasJim

What took a while was figuring out a pattern. Tide was rising from fairly low levels and a few fish were visibly and noisily feeding along a shallow mud and shell shoreline, but I could only get one 25” out of that effort. Also saw a few flounder flipping along the same stretch and that was surprising. Near as I could tell, there were some small shad around. There were a decent amount of other baitfish in there, at least some were finger sized mullet.

Finally, I gave up on the shallow shoreline and went to fish ~18” of water flowing over an oyster reef. Got an undersized red or two, then the 17” trout and on back to back casts, the remaining two reds.

2 trout, the one keeper plus a 10” fish and then 5 redfish was the final tally. I gave up shortly after the third keeper.

The only pattern that paid off for effort expended was the reef.

I did try a super spook jr topwater and a Saltwater assassin paddle tail in Hammertime, but everything came on a tan Borski slider.

Ah, the old Borski Slider! I like the fishing lure, but love the cocktail!

Great report and return to action, Karstopo. I haven't fished in about 3 months, maybe have forgotten how to cast and paddle by now...

Hard to beat big Redfish and legal Trout... Photos were scrumptious. Makes me want to fish.

Hope I do as well when I return.
