The 13th Annual Rockport Redfish Round-Up kicked off on October 2nd. My sister, Ron, Lou, and Steve were down to fish the first day. We had light northwesterly winds which would swing to the northeast through the day. We decided to fish Cavasso Creek. Now, I've been kayak fishing for over 20 years and stay at a cabin on Copano Bay less than 10 minutes from this launch, but I have never fished Cavasso Creek.
We worked the protected shoreline with the goal of hitting the second set of lakes about 2 miles to the north. I brought my fly rod this morning with the hopes of casting at some reds. The stretch between the sets of lakes held individual reds somewhat tailing. They would run into the grass, attack shrimp, and then come back out. I had two reds hooked up but I didn't get a good hookset. However, third time was the charm.
Caught on color variation of this shrimp. I took some more shots at reds with the fly rod, but missed or spooked all the other reds I targeted. We started to work our way up the slough into the targeted lakes. As soon as we turned the corner we came up to 8 footish gator. We turned around and drift fished the outside.
We entered the first set of back lakes on our way back in. I was able to pick up another red blind casting into pockets of the back sloughs.
As 1 o'clock approached we started to drift the outside the main portion of Cavasso creek. I picked up a slot trout out here. Our group stringer tally was 3 reds and a trout. (A red for Ron, and two reds/1 trout for myself)
A helper when cleaning the fish.
The rest of our group (Dale, Andy, Whit and William) made it into Rockport just as we were returning to the cabin from fishing. Tradition calls for a kick off dinner. This year we made Cioppino with cod, crab, shrimp, and mussels.
Another tradition is bringing a bottle of booze to share with the group. Here's a small selection we enjoyed the first night.
I'll add the meteorological stuff later, but here's the GPS track.

Too many thanks to list - Josh and Nina are superlative hosts, Stevo is my brother from 6th grade, cousin Darrell for letting us park Steve's Oliver trailer and using his power.
Remembered we hadn't fished Cavasso Creek in 30 years, and last time we landed, TPWD was releasing a 10' gator along with all the others they snag at Goose Is. SP.
Great hard-pack launch, and paddle into the sunrise.
I was behind Josh along the grass, and sight-fishing his rejects. Prop-tail topwater shrimp cast into the grass caught my first and best red.
Great photos of Josh with a fly rod red.
After doing the math, recognized I caught 5 redfish on each day, though they weren't all worth braggin'
My day ended with a small wind knot in my braid, and the knot breaking an over-slot spec right at the boat.
All part of the fun, and a great day.
Seafood stew hit the spot, and Josh is an exceptional cook.
When Josh earlier asked me for a Wed meal recommendation, I told him his and Nina's competition in the kitchen always exceeded our imaginations.

Great reports, guys! After Harvey, I took my yak to Cavasso. There were huge bones all over the launch area. I was told later that ranchers that lost cows in the storm drug them over to Cavasso for the gators to dispose of. Nature recycles. Someone asked me if I saw any gators, and I told them: "No, but I'm sure they saw me." I was gonna ask Josh if his "Shrimp Pattern" worked, but I can see it did. Good trip, comradery(?) and excellent food. TexasJim
