webberville to hwy 969

Post by beekeeper »

Myself, my son Raley along with his friends Nick and Tommy made a challenging trip from Little Webberville Park to the hwy 969 bridge. The heat and hydrilla was no joke. I nicknamed this trip salad bowl 2. Some of you TKFers may recall salad bowl 1 about 12 or so years ago. Camping spots were difficult to come by as everything is grown up and as usual, shallow shorelines were difficult to find, the hydrilla obscuring what was there

I am 67 and struggled with the heat and conditions. My fine, healthy companions made the trip much more pleasurable.

I was an Austin river rat, did that section and more.
I like 969 to fishermans park in Bastrop. Good day trip, pretty scenery, good fishing and a fun rapids near the end.
Good memories!

Hi Beekeeper,
Long time no see. Thanks for the report.
It's been a while since the River Dawgs.

Yea, that stretch is about 18 miles. That’s a long overnighter even with a decent flow, but this year we’ve had minimal current. With the lower flow the grass and vegetation have really built up.
And yea, we’re in a drought and it’s been a dry, hot, and sunny October.

I remember the Salad Bowl. I was the instigator of that trip. It was a classic River Dawg camp.
It seemed to always rain the night before a trip. That time it rained a lot the night before and the river rose big time and brought in all that vegetation. That trip we were moving about 3 MPH not even paddling. We made pretty good time.

What’s up motoyak?
I’ve done a few day trips with you too back in the day.

Still, it’s beautiful out there in any condition.
I’m out there as much I can.

David, do you do any group trips these days? I believe 2014 was the last one we did. Paul, Lynn, the big fisherman and his wife. I forget his name, I think he is from Kyle. I last yakked with Paul and Lynn in’19 on the upper Brazos. haven’t heard from or seen them since

I haven't done one of those big invite trips since the old days. There's a few of us locals that still river camp pretty regularly.
It would be cool to do a reunion trip some time. It has been 10-15 years since we did those.
It would be hard to put one together before the end of the year, but come spring I'll try to post up a reunion trip.

I'll PM you my info, get a hold of me when y'all ever come down this way.
I would like to do an Upper Brazos next year, I know y'all have that down good.
Say hi to BOP for me.

We will keep you in mind and I will pass along hello to BOP. My son and some of his friends are excited about doing more of these trips, either down your way or up here.
