Jig Heads

I almost always used the plain lead Bass Assassin push on heads mainly in 1/16 or 1/8 ounce, but those are exceedingly hard to find at our Academy (apparently mostly an apparel store these days) and other local vendors so I switched to Norton plain lead heads in 1/8 and 1/4 ounce. I kind of feel like these Norton heads are just as good if not better than the BA. The Norton 1/16 ounce look so tiny I haven’t bought any yet.

I used these down the coast around the Rockport area in all that sea grass, both our guides were anti-weedless rig fishermen. The grass, when we fished those grassy areas, would often foul the heads, but we still caught fish, at least early in the cast before the heads got too fouled.

The biggest determinant of success as far as I can tell is to be very careful about threading on the soft plastic so that the plastic tracks true and straight. I test each new soft plastic to ensure it runs true. Any helicopter or spin or sideways bias seems to be very harmful to getting strikes. I’ve noticed some people that I have fished with don’t really pay attention to this factor and then wonder why they aren’t getting hits.

I am a big fan of the Death Grip gumball jigheads - 1/8 and 1/4 oz. I used to use the Academy ones, but the soft plastic says on these so much better, and the hooks are strong and super sharp. https://captlanesghostminnows.godaddysi ... e=products

Lately, I have been using tungsten bullet weights for my swim baits. I got the idea from my freshwater set up. I go weightless for my bigger swim baits. Yes, fishing tackle is hard to find at Academy but this is when I go to BP or FTU, but this is pricey.

I try my best to keep my baits straight but sometimes it does not matter; as long it's not too bad. I'm thinking about buying those screw lock jigs like you mentioned.

I agree that having the jig run true will get more strikes. That said I got into a mess of trout at Matagorda last year so I decided to experiment, humpback, brokenback, hooked the plastic upside down. On that day it did not seem matter, for about 45 mins anyway.
