Holy moley Batman, I finally did it!

Post by Prof. Salt »

Every winter I snag multiple mullet, some in the head but never in the mouth. I believe they see the lure hopping and come to investigate before getting snagged by a sharp hook. I have heard of others catching mullet by using tiny baits and figured, good for them if that's what they are after. Well recently I was fishing for larger fish on a cold evening and got a hard thump on the line. The fight was odd, and it was clear that it was a small fish, but when this guy came to the net I was impressed. For having such a small mouth he found a way to get the entire hook in there. Still not sure how he thought that lure was going down the hatch, but I can now check "mullet" off my species catch list. I'm saving my money for other projects, so I decided rather than getting him mounted for the office I would practice catch and release. Maybe I should try something else unusual. Anyone know what color lures seahorses prefer?

I caught a mullet in the mouth like this about 20+ years ago on a Strike King Tube Bait in Pumpkin Chartreuse. I think I was in Mesquite Bay.

I have caught 3 on flies in 20 years. Usually green flies, which I assumed looked like algae.
There is a guy on Instagram in Japan that targets Mullet with tiny freshwater trout flies.

Our coolest surprise ever was a September first-light tide-fall at Little Cut, and finding stacked snook.
They were all about 14" - across the cut, I believe Tony got one on fly rod.

When I was very young we lived in Florida. A thing down there was - maybe still is - smoked mullet. They split them and then smoke with Baywood. Actually quite good eating. When we would go back to visit, especially in Cedar Key, we would stock up on the smoked mullet to bring home. That and bags of oysters and oranges.

When I was a poor college student, if didn't catch anything good then I'd net a couple of horse mullet for dinner, with butter and lemon they are pretty good!
