Speckled Sunday

Post by JBH1979 »

Sat Morning was a little rough. Wind was blowing all wrong in our usual spot so we headed to water that we hadn’t fished in a long time. Wind was at our backs Saturday evening & I caught nothing but a minor sun burn. SKUNKED

Sunday, was a different story. When we left Sat night we noticed that the wind was dead & we noticed bait moving into our area so we made it a point to be there before sun up on Sun. morning. When we arrived at 6:00 Sun morning the water was in good shape & there was not even a breeze, the ocean looked like glass. When we first let out we immediately got a few bites but no takers. My brother was the first to catch a trout & it was a little small. He then proceeded to catch a really nice trout on topwater (zara puppy, red head, white body). That trout broke his line as he was trying to net it. I noticed in the distance bait hitting the top of the water and it was moving our way quickly. I paddled out & kept throwing soft plastics with no luck. I then noticed that all of this bait was finger mullet & larger mullet & they were covering the top of the water, it was crazy how thick the bait was. I changed my bait to a rockport rattler (lead w/red eyes) & put on a Berkely power bait glass minnow (holographic) & this did the trick. I immediately started catching trout under the mullet one after another. Yelled out to my brother & gave him some of the glass minnow baits I had & he was on the fish as well. By 10:00 a.m. I had 7 trout on my stringer & then the big one!!!! I casted out not really paying much attention and suddenly I got a hit, not a big hard hit but a normal one. I quickly started fumbling for my net when I heard the fish break the water. My brother yelled out that it was a huge trout & suddenly I was worried about losing this fish. It started singing the drag the first time I brought it close to the yak but I still had not seen it yet. I knew it was a trout but how big??? Finally it breaks the water next to my yak & my heart was pounding, this was my biggest trout.... I tried to net it but it just laid across my net!!! My second netting attempt I got most of his hind body in the net & used the line to keep his head up & brought him in. I was so shocked to see this trout sitting in my lap I just sat there for a few seconds. When I reached down to grab him he quickly started thrashing & back into the water he made it, my heart nearly dropped out of my chest because I knew I was going to lose this trout. I scrambled again for the net covered in slime & got him back in the yak but this time I leaned over & bear hugged that baby, it wasn’t leaving unless it was on the stringer. I got it on the stringer & my heart began to beat again. I was two fish shy of my limit & my brother did almost as well. He managed to net a 21” trout & we both had 15”-20” on our stringers. All in all we brought back 12 specs & 1 flounder to end the day. By the way my big trout was 25” & I would guestimate around 5-6 lbs. WHAT A DAY!!!

27.5" for me, bank fishing (before I got a yak) from the pleasure island levee. At first I thought it was a good red, but I like to have died when it surfaced!!!!!!!

Many trout in the 26" range but I have yet to get the "ONE". I know it will come one day. I am a very dedicated trout fisherman and as long as I keep putting in the work, I will get her someday. Last year on Fathers Day I was fishing with a guide and I lost one that was at or near 30". I was in waist deep water fishing a reef and was putting a good stringer of trout together but nothing with great size. The trout were running about 17" and I was having a good time because my budy was 30' from me and wasnt having much luck. We were joking and ribbing each other when I get another fish on, it feels just like the other trout. Fish doesnt fight hard at all and it stays down deep near the bottom. I horse it in and get it right at my feet and pull up to lift it higher in the water so I can grab it. As soon as I got it high enough in the water to see her my heart jumped out of my chest. I had horsed her way to much and she had a large hole in her lip where my jighead was. She saw me and unleashed a fury of water thrashing soaking me and breaking my heart as she spit the hook and swam away.

Congrat's on a nice trout! I love to catch them on topwater, but the only nice trout i've caught was on a red shad over near the TCD. It was approximately 26" and weighted 6.02 and I lost 4th place by one oz. in a police tourney.

Easy, that quote from Slingy cracks me up everytime I read it. I have a feeling he is gonna have to eat those words soon. I bet he catches one over 17" at Stars and Stripes! I have faith in him. Plus, he will have a pretty dang good trout man as his partner.

That's a solid fish.

My biggest trout ever is a 25 inch fat girl. Matter of fact i've caught two right at 25".

I'm still searching for that 30" fish, and if the day ever comes that i land her then i'm puttin her on the wall.

IMHO, there are few greater thrills anyone can experience than a 30" trout caught in shallow SaltH20.

You'll find no other wiley beast on this earth, that I've experienced to date, that will give you more of a show fighting for her/their survival.

It's an airborne show with water involved that can best be described as every which way - and then loose - in most cases, if anglers are honest.

While the trout "show" will always give you a thrill, nothing you ever catch in the bay will give you more airborn thrills and drag screamin' runs than that elusive
Silver Ghost over 30" , so you begin to appreciate them.

I've caught more than my share of 27" plus trout. At times, almost at will because I'd done my homework to back up my skill.

I knew my trout game well enough to walk out of my back door and catch this trout in Copano Bay several hours after my only son was born while waiting on the Dr. to release him and his Mom to come home.

It was the Hospital that measured my son that day, not this ol' salty dog, and he was a legal: 21 3/4".

Image

That trout caught several hours after he was born wasn't caught by accident. I promise you that. 8) However, I am thankful my son was born in April, ...that made it a lot easier.

Learning, chasing, understanding and then when you can finally 'relate' to how a big trout thinks, all I can say is be ready for that moment.

You won't have much time to think about it when it happens.

Thousands of anglers dream of that moment yet few get a chance at that 30"er THeir entire lifetime - no matter how often they fish - including guides that fish croakers for a living, - however you do have a lifetime to prepare for a 30" trout.

Every Rockport Rattler jig that goes out of my shop has only that concept in mind when it is made and shipped.

30" TROUT.

Catch a bigger trout than this:

Now,... like I tell my LL Champions:

"Go getcha some of that 'stuff' ....."

Bluffer,.......

If those guides that followed my Dad and I around from 1995 - 2003 only knew.

They never had a clue that the RR was conceived before my son was born.

8)

Some things are better left unsaid.

See ya at the Kayak Masters Tourney.
