The current record is 16.66lbs held by a good friend NavyNuke
it is a "Galveston Body of Water Record" I think is how it is worded.
Not sure where it covers.

No where I was anchored there was 2' of water and 5' of mud.
And I had seen a few gators and I was by myself so I stayed
in the yak. I thought it was a Gar they were rolling all day
so I did get out the small gaff that I carry out there.
Hooked him with the gaff under the gill and inserted stringer.
I did not want him flopping around my legs with his barbs.

A gaff for big cats is a good idea. A fish that big could hurt you .

Not any more it was real tasty. Even my girls (Dogs) got fried catfish mixed with their supper. And I still have 3-4 meals left in the freezer.
It was a b!tch to skin. Even a 12 penny nail would not fit through it huge head. Which I kept. I have an Old Family recipe for Shrunken Heads.
Thought I would give it a try.

The Salted Shad someone posted a long time back and I think Gum re-posted it. I don't go to all the steps they talked about.
Fill the bottom of a cooler with salt, add a layer of shad, shrimp or any bait. Add another layer of salt and .......... till full. Wait 48hrs then rinse the bait and bag it in day trip size bags and then put in freezer.

I don't mess with it as much. Just take an old coffee can some salt, shad, salt until full. Shake them up so they are well coated. and thats it.
When I hit the water with a canfull I just rinse the salt off before I cast or you will be wearing it. Not good    done that.

Shruken Catfish Head

Post by Coastal Whaler »

Here's the head of a yellow cat I caught today. Don't know if I'd like to shrink it but any recipies out there to preserve it. Just curious, thanks for any replies. By the way, nice blue! Big Blue Cat's are hard to beat pan grilled with butter and seasoning. 8)

Coastal Whaler I was joking about the family recipe for shrunken heads.
That is a huge yellow cat Congrats.
In Fla we would just burry them in the "Sandy" back yard and all the bugs would eat all the meat of and leave just the bone. Soak it in bleach for a mth or 2 and it worked great. I have "dried" bait in salt and it works great.
So I put the Blue Cat head in a big zip lock bag filled with rock salt and triple bagged it. Will let it sit for a mth or 2 and see how it looks.

Well, I was sort of worried about the shruken head idea, and didn't really want to comment on that. I was thinking about asking where your family got that recipe, but on second thought, decided it might be one of those questions that was better not being asked  I always cut the tails and let the larger blues bleed-out. I filet just like a trout and keep the knife off the skin while skinning so the dark meat is left on. I trim all the red out and what's left is white as snow. I found I enjoy them more pan grilled than fried. Either way is GREAT though!

Danny M'Lad, I just noticed your post. Nice yellow cat! Sorry, I don't have a recipe for preserving them. I just put 'em on a fence post like the rest of the rednecks around here. I did get some nice cheek meat off of the ones I caught awhile back.
