Got "Moby"

Post by Strider »

We couldn't resist the temptation to return to our gar catching spot today. I'd like to think we caught a fish that was as large as "Moby", which we lost yesterday. Again, weight calculators fail me, but I'd say this fish, which measured 83" in length and 34 1/2" in girth was pushing 180#.

I am so glad it is raining. I need to stay home tomorrow.

I don't think I would be in the water where that thing was swimming. Good gosh that thing is huge. I did not know they git that big. I have seen them several feet long, but not that fat.

They are actually very gentle fish when not being harrassed by us fishermen. Seashell, even knowing the fish were in the hole of water we were fishing was begging me to let her go swimming.

Great catch. I see you were using a strike indicator. Amazing catch for what some would call a small river, at least in the rain conditions you've had the past couple of years.

Not absolutely necessary but a big help seeing's the fish may carry the bait up or downstream 100 or more yards prior to deciding whether or not to eat it.

I don't know how accurate this length/girth calculator is, but even if the gar was small for its size, the calculator indicates it was over 200 lbs. :

be very careful with those things. Just when you think they're asleep or dead, they wake up real quick! On two different trips I almost wound up with some nasty wounds. One time I had one in my row boat next to my leg when it decided to let me know it was still alive. I got scratched pretty bad by its teeth on my calf. It kinda felt like when you take a spill on the jetties and tear up your leg. Another time a friend caught one and I was walking by it and it swung around and clipped my ankle. I almost fell on it. It's good that your daughter is keeping the fishing rod between her and that bad boy. I caught my first gar(3 footer) while working a cast net on a spillway. I bearhugged it back to the bank where these two old men watching me said I was stupid for doing so. They told me that if he had clamped on to me(purple nurple) he would of started spinning and tore off a chunk of skin.

Ron,

:D Yes sir! :D Today, our first fish was 74" (120 lbs?), second was 65" (50 lbs?) and the third was the big one. We were 3 runs for three landings and all fish were released.

That's it. I let Lollipop borrow a yak and not bring it back so I'd have a good excuse to go get it. I'm going gar fishing in the Medina first chance I get.

What can you use besides fish and nylon rope for bait?

EWB,

I would go to Fiesta and buy some fresh fish. They usually have freshwater drum and sometimes buffalo. It is perfectly legal to use these fish for bait.

Jerry, I think it would work real well, but to avoid any legal confrontations (although it is probably legal so long as the tilapia are gutted), if I were going to buy some fish I would get freshwater drum or buffalo. Fiesta usually has both. I just told EWB that on the other post.

Saw the Fiesta post, the nearest Fiesta is about 25 miles away. May go over to Liberty and pick up some Buffalo, that is, if I can't get drum, carp, or tilapia in my cast net. I've caught 3 and 4 foot gator gar on Lake Houston, do believe there are bigger ones.
