Bait Blow ups- GISP

Post by CostaDeCajunTejas34 »

My buddie and I were at GISP saturday morning and saw the craziest thing! We were just wading along the geotubes when all of a sudden we here this huge splash from the side of us, so we look at the ripples of the splash and another splash, and as these splashes were happening big mullet and other bait fish were jumpin out of the water, the splasing and jumping happen for about 3 minutes straight. The only problem was that i never got to see what was making all that ruckus. I say shark and My buddie says Mackrel and Maybe even Big A$$ Trout!

Open Minds to all!

On the bay side this time of year it was probably not jacks. Trout maybe, but it would have to be a school of trout to last that long. The longest I've ever seen a big trout require to catch a hors mullet was about 15 seconds (pretty cool to see a 8 pound trout bring her shoulders up out of the water to strike a 14" mullet). Reds don't typically hit the top that much but they are always up in there almost year round so they are a suspect, so maybe.

I'm with you. I'd bet shark.

Having fished that area lately, I would actually guess gafftop

They were schooling up and hitting the surface like crazy the other day. Other than that I would say some small jacks

I vote for a school of jacks as well. Sharks make their way back into the geo tubes when the water warms up but i think they have other fish on their minds instead of large mullet. Usually sharks are looking for the fish that eat the mullet and other bait fish.

Jacks would be my guess too. They're already in the bays. We saw one way up in the bay chasing mullet in about a foot of water with his back out the other day.

I didn't read anywhere that you cast in their direction. Too far away?

I have casted right into the middle of those blow ups as they were happening. If it was jacks, they would have hit the lure, no doubt about it. Jacks also are much more visual normally, you can see their tails or fins break the surface. Bull shark still gets my vote. Whatever it is, they are dang impressive, huh?
