Watch those feet HI 5/18
Watch those feet HI 5/18
Headed to HI with Mythman to do some fishing. The overall day was fairly slow. Slimers were thick and hungry. I caught one BR and then nothing so me Wolfman and Redheadfishin moved out a little further and I caught another small BR. I missed a few more then nothing. So me and MM moved in closer to shore and sit and wait and wait. A little while later I hear wolfman holler. MM called him on the radio and was informed he had caught a few BR so we headed back out to potlick him. MM hooks up and is off for a ride meanwhile I am back to waiting. MM got pulled quite a distance from us and I figured I would paddle out to check on him at the same time Wolfman has the same idea. About the time I turn to bring in my line I get a run and hook up with another BR. Wolfman says "I will see you later". Well the BR spun me to my left and went under my anchor line. No big deal just do what I always do and catch it with my foot and pull it and run the rod under it. The fish takes off to the right and then cuts back left and afain under my anchor so I just repeat the process. Feet still in the water I get the fish to the yak. Then all of the sudden a BIG bull shark comes out of nowhere and crashes the redfish which is only a foot away from my foot I jerked my foot in so fast I almost fell off the otherside. The shark bit the BR in half. I screem like a girl and jerk my feet out of the water. I yelled at Wolfman "that scared the s#$t out of an 8' bull shark just bit my fish in half". Then the shark went after the rest of the fish. I figured why not and let him have it. Next thing you know I am off to the races. Wolfman is trying to get my second rod for but can't keep up with the speed of my yak. So I put the brakes and stuck my feet in the water so he could catch me. After that it turned into a battle of wills. Wolfman is videoing me as I get the shark to the top and getting towed towards him with the shark staring him down. It took me a few time before I could get a hold of the leader to get its head up. It was not 8' but well over 6. When the pictures get posted I will take a measurement against the kayak to get some idea of the actual length. This is my personal best.
The day was a blast and again thanks MM. Thanks to you to on the vids and assist Wolfman.

Re: Watch those feet HI 5/18
Took the ferry over to Bolivar and the water was not as pristine as I had hoped for. Supposed to be a ICECREAM day. But once I got to HI it looked like this:
We load the yaks up get the gear ready and paddle out to 14 foot of water. We're not there more than 5 minutes and Redhead Fishing hooks up with the first Bull Red.
After the release I'm sitting there and get a pretty quick run on mullet at the bottom. And pull in #1
I was excited to pull one in so quick and after a little while pull in #2
Jonny A, Redhead Fishing, Chief Brody, Mythman were haning out catching some fish when the slimers came in and the reds just shut down. After slimer after slimer we paddle out to 20 foot of water.
THings were the same out there. Chief Brody pulled in a nice BR that he faught on light tackle.
Nicely done on 15 lb line.
the tide slacks and things just get pretty quiet.
Birds were working the water, but all there was was slimers.
The gang decided to go to shallower water....I stayed for a while...and picked up 2 more bull reds.
I call them back to 20' and when they pulled up got my 5th bull red of the day
MM takes off on a shark run and I decide it is time to be wingman to him and call it a day. Just as I'm packing in and start paddling Johnny A is setting off fireworks in the water and Screaming.
The water around him is just spashing like crazy and he's pulling his feet into the yak quick enough to almost shoot him out the other side. Then he takes off towards cuba like a rocket.
I finally catch up to him and take his spare rod and the fight is on.
HE finally gets the shark up to the surface on this video. He pulls it up, runs into a few yaks in the process. First sight of the bull.
Shark was a mean Bull well over 6 foot and Johnny A has entered the 100lb club as the shark was well over that mark.
Great day to fish with friends. COngratulations on some great fish caught. Not a slammed day, but a good day fishing and an adventure. Johnny A that fight was awesome.

Nice job Johnny!! Now I know the secret bait, bullred head. Either that, or can I get you to rub your feet on my bait next time?? Nice meetin you and Wolfman and Chief Brody. As always, a pleasure fishin with you Mythman. I hooked up two bullreds and had to pull the plug by 1300 to spend some time with da Mrs. Glad to see things picked up a bit more for yall. See ya next time. Tight lines.
Re: Watch those feet HI 5/18
Congrats on that hefty shark. All it takes is one big one to make a slow day into a fun day.

Good job guys
Now I understand why this BR was getting left and right on that anchor rope...
I don't want this shark on my line this summer....
I'll be better off with the blacktips....
