Lower Pecos River / Seminole Canyon State Park

Post by lptxtandem »

Hello All,

We're planning the subject trip from March 9th (arrive late March 8th ) and departing on midday March 13th. My wife and I will be peddling a 2011 Hobie Oasis, We are planning to rent a canoe for my daugher, her son (our 5yo grandson) and her boyfriend.

I'm thinking that we could make a few casual and maybe a couple of aggressive day trips both down river and up river.

I would love to hear ideas from any of you that have experience in this area. We are open to fishing and/or sightseeing, but definitely want to have fun!

Is there anyone to rent a canoe from near the campground?

Thanks for any input...

lp,

Did you make the trip afterall? Was Seminole Canyon in reach with the low water in Amistad and mud bar between Pecos and Rio Grande? I'm asking because I am scheduled to do the same trip in mid-April. My biggest concern is the water level and previously mentioned mud bar in another post.

May be too late but siminole canyon state park does not have access to the water in the park even when the lake is at normal pool. You will need to drive to the lake. I thought the same thing but we stayed there before our devils river trip summer before last.

Hello Big Country,
We did make the trip and had a great time. For some reason I posted here: http://www.texaskayakfisherman.com/foru ... 2&t=176131

We launched at the Hwy 90 bridge and only went upstream due to the mud bar you mentioned. Our experience was great (first time there).

I talked with a couple from the Clear lake area that was also staying at the state park. They went downstream into the Rio Grande - and here was the story he told me:

This was their first time there and they had wanted to see the caves and sights on the Rio Grande. He said that it was very shallow crossing the mud bar maybe 6-8" deep. Sorry, but I didn't catch the distance where it was that shallow. They had no problem going into the Rio (I think that both had Ocean Kayak SOT's about 12'). Once there, the sights were great - but due to the low water level there was about 10-15' of deep silt, so they couldn't get out and explore (or even stretch). They had paddled out about 2 hours out, then started back.
Paddling back upstream on the Rio was not an issue until returning to the mud bar. They found that due to the low water level and steady current it was virtually impossible to paddle and make any headway. They ended up having to dig their paddles into the silt from side to side and inch forward to make any headway. He said that it took them about 2 hours just to get across the mud bar!
He was pretty intense telling me this story. I was so glad that we didn't try that ourselves and it sure made me grateful that we didn't have to go through that...
Hope this helps
