I met up with Thidawg and his crew, and we took the four Hobie Outbacks out to Galveston to search for the Big Uglies. We decided to try Seawolf Park instead of Apffel and it was an interesting day. We weren't sure if this area was a good area to fish, but we gave it a try anyways. I can definitely say Seawolf Park would not be a great launch site for kayaks as it was mostly rocks, but we made it work.
We arrived at Seawolf Park and it was pretty crowded with all the spring breakers.
We loaded the kayaks up and of course, I got my arsenal ready:
We fished the shipwreck and saw some people jetski fishing, and also a bunch of powerboats fishing around.
There was no bites at the shipwreck, so we headed around the park to the Galveston Ship Channel. We setup right in front of the bank fishermen, and a few powerboats were already there fishing.
This is the Big Ugly I caught...some kind of mystery fish that felt like a frog:
After that, no other bites but whiting and decided to head back in.
That's a monkfish (aka dogfish) and they are about the worst trash fish there is. They try to bite the hell out of you and they have spines behind their fins. The only time I ever catch em is when I'm fishing bait on the bottom around structure.
It's actually a Toadfish. They are very common around heavy structure like rocks and jetties. I've never tried one, but supposedly they are very good to eat.
that's the thing about BTB you never know what you are going to bring up. I've been watching the posts to find out when the Big Uglys are going to be hot and heavy in the HSC. Weird it was so slow
I saw guys from the little fishing deck lobbing baits out from Seawolf park and catching BU hand over fist! I saw them bring in 10 in 1hour! never thought of launching from Seawolf but thought about fishing in front of it for BU! Longshot

Different fish. Toadfish don't have wings. I used to catch a lot of Sea Robins in Mississippi. They are a neat looking fish.
True the pelvic fins of the sea robin look larger, but the only real similarity I see between the OP's picture and the toadfish is the size and shape of the pelvic fins. The colors and markings of the fish in the OP's picture and the toadfish are substantially different.
Its called a dog fish no good for anything...they ruin lures and steal bait spend most of there lifes on bottom eat the parasites in the mud and hide from predators they make a sound that croakers make live near by sunken ships or other large structure everybody should now this ...im only 13
I have a Vietnamese friend who asks me to save him any fish I don't want to eat. His rule is: the uglier it looks, the better it tastes. He will eat anything I offer, including toadfish. He says they are very good, but then again he eats dogs too; they may be good, but I'm not in a hurry to eat man's best friend (or toadfish).
yup thats a gulf toad fish, i catch them over at the moses gate sometimes, the coloration can vary depending on location caught ive caught some in the mud that look like yours there, and ive caught some closer to rocks and shell that are lighter with more grey and tan streaks
I've always called em dogfish and I never touch em because I always heard they can sting the hell out of you and have poison in their spines? I've caught a few over in Seabrook fishing for flounder through the years.
