Where to fish near Meridian?

Post by safarigene »

Recently got kayak's for the wife and I. We live in Clifton and are looking for good places to fish and kayak. We have fished at Plowman, Kimbal Bend, and Meridian State parks, but only caught two fish. We love to fish, but don't seem to have much luck. I am not sure if it is where, or how we are fishing. Not going to speak for the wife, but I know that my knowledge and skills are not up to snuff. Any help or tips on where and how to fish would be great.

Thanks,
Gene

You might was to try the Brazos below Lake Whitney. You can easily put in on the east side and go down aways and then come back or you can go down to Dick's Place and pay to take out there. The run to Dick's will take most of the day if you fish.

Also there may be some new public access in the works. I'll post when I learn more.

I have never been, but I have always wanted to paddle Meridian State Park.

I would stay away from the Brazos. I want it all to myself.

Listening closely about this new public access on the Brazos. Could be a bad thing. Kind of nice for it to be not so easy of a place to get to.
More public access means more people who are there for their good time and not worried about anyone elses. The ones who fish it now work hard to fish it for a day and show the river a little respect. Just my opinion.

check out squaw creek. It is not horribly far from Meridian and has the advantage of being heated. Not so great now but really nice come November/December..

There's good fish in the water you listed. What lure/technique are you using?

Budreaux,

Have mostly been trying what has worked for me in the last place I fished, which was a private stocked tank. I am now thinking that those fish would bite pretty much anything. I have been trying plastic worms, rattle traps, x-raps, and also a silver kastmaster spoon.

If anyone needs a partner to go with them and I can schedule it, I would be glad to go along with someone who knows what they are doing just to learn.

Stick with a worm or fluke and slow it down. Try unweighted too. In Meridian I would go fish on the west side around the timber. The medium to darker greens like watermelon or pumpkin would be my starting colors.

Don't forget Lake Waco just down the road. Also Lake Whitney above the damm is a good place too. Just stay out of the boat lanes. Good Luck.
