Plans arrived today for the FS18 from bateau.com
Can't wait to get started, but it looks like I have allot of reading and studying to do this weekend.

This is going to be a cool build!
Looking at the plans it sorta looks like a big Jem paddle board If I ever moved back to corpus this is the kind of boat I would like to have. Is it the same one Tombo is going to build?

Thanks I think it will be cool too. Not sure if this is the same one he's building or not. This type of poling skiff should be allot of fun around Corpus Christi.

Re: Flats Stalker 18
I couldn't read or study the plans any longer. I had the need to build something. So I went ahead and built the strong back. For the first time I don't think it's that bad. It's level and square so far so good. I want to add casters to it so it will easy to move around and clean the shop floor.
Re: Flats Stalker 18
I have the same plans. Can I call you?

Casters are huge, I have those on my canoe strongback right now. I'm working in a 1 car garage, but they're still such a good idea!

The hardest part so far is finding the time. But at least I started making saw dust.

Nothing fancy yet just measuring, drawing, cutting.
Re: Flats Stalker 18
I can already smell the outboard exhaust from your pictures.
If you don't mind, I would like to see your work when you get further along.

I'll be watching this one for sure. I think a polling skiff type of boat would be fun to build.

Still hard finding the free time to work on her.
I first aligned the pieces and drilled holes for 3/8 hardwood dowels. The dowels align it after the slippery epoxy goes between layers. Then clamp together and let set up.
The transom is being made from three pieces of 3/8 ply laminated together. I first aligned the pieces and drilled holes for 3/8 hardwood dowels. The dowels align it after the slippery epoxy goes between layers. Then clamp together and let set up.

Got the stations on the strongback to form the mold.
Cut out one stinger and set it in place.
I need to get a better camera. Right now just using the one on my phone, lol. Also found out I need better shop lighting.- Attachments

Laminating the stringers.
I cut them out, aligned all the pieces together and drilled dowel holes. The stingers are made of several pieces of 1/4 ply laminated together.Re: Flats Stalker 18
I was studying the plans where they were applying the fiberglass cloth, it did not cover all the sides of the hull? What did you think?

Re: Flats Stalker 18
Yeah I don't really like having the exposed wood. Well it would be covered in epoxy and then painted. That is protection, but I think I'm going to add more cloth and go all the way up to the gunnel. Figure all the time and money invested I only want to do it once.Tombo wrote:I was studying the plans where they were applying the fiberglass cloth, it did not cover all the sides of the hull? Yeah, Shamrock...I'd go that route...what's the old line...might as well do it right the first time, since you don't have the time to do it over! I heard that all my growing up life!

Yeah I've always tried to do things that way.barditch wrote:.might as well do it right the first time:
Ok, building on. Got the transom on the jig. Also got the first splice done on the bottom panels.
Got to let them set up, then flip and repeat. Enough for tonight it's rum and diet coke time.

Re: Flats Stalker 18
Flipped the bottom panels and spliced them early this morning. No pics cause it looks exactly the same as it did before. Got them stitched together and set on the mold tonight.
Lined up real good so far, almost like I new what I was doing. Don't know how that happened. Also got the side panel first splice done. But forgot to get pics of it.
But you can see them laying on the ground in the corner of this picture. - Thinwater skinner

Re: Flats Stalker 18
Looking good so far!
I like seeing projects come along at a decent pace.
If you're anything like me, once I start a project, I don't get much else done around the house until its finished..
Any ideas on what you're going to use to power this thing?
