I think I saw this guy at the first rig out at Mayan Princess. He didn't have an anchor so he was fighting the current. He was in a Pro Angler and was maybe fishing solo.

Glad help came when they did
Re: OK, fess up? Which BTBer is this?
I used to have a Pro Angler and the issue with the design is that the huge front hatch is not sealed. It is only held on by bungee and the lid can easily be pulled open letting water in. Once you turtle, water will come in through that opening and fill the kayak. It is REALLY difficult to self rescue once you have that much water in the kayak. He may of had the same issue and could not upright the kayak by himself.
If you watch the youtube self rescue video for the pro angler, they also have the same problem of water entering the hull.

Re: OK, fess up? Which BTBer is this?
I just may rig a couple of horizontal straps across the front hatch to be used only off shore .... they certainly would not make it water tight but would significantly slow the on slot of water entering the hull in a turtle situation compared to the front hatch accidently being pulled open in a panic to right the yak. Several more large pool noodles and/or air bag under the front hatch liner wouldn't hurt either. May also try to figure a way to clamp the front hatch liner down and seal off the hull better. Every kayak certainly has it's flaws to deal with.

Glad he got scooped up in time, did they not save the kayak? Maybe they knew it was a pro angler and let it sink.

Re: OK, fess up? Which BTBer is this?
I have added closed cell foam liner to the front hatch of my PA and it still get water in the front hatch, sometimes when going through the surf or big waves. Once in a PA with a crack which allowed a lot of water in, I rolled my PA and had to upright it and re-enter. Thankfully I had guys to help. Must have pumped out 5 gallons of water.
I do leave the hatch liner tub in my PA which collects most of the water that enters the front hatch. It is pretty easy to just pull the liner tub out and empty it.
Because the PA's are so roomy and comfortable we take them offshore, but they really were not designed for that.

I'm sure glad he is ok! I only have one question. When that happens and you have to be rescued does your kayak get rescued to or is it left behind?
Re: OK, fess up? Which BTBer is this?
At this point I would think it was recovered as it would have been a navigation hazard. Just my opinion.fishintexas wrote:I'm sure glad he is ok! I only have one question. When that happens and you have to be rescued does your kayak get rescued to or is it left behind?

Re: OK, fess up? Which BTBer is this?
This is why i always have the two most important things for me...1. a damn good pfd, 2. my spot gps locator. that guy is very lucky that he got rescued things could have gone alot worse for him...makes me think of doing a few tweaks to my PA
Re: OK, fess up? Which BTBer is this?
That doesn't appear to be a PA to me... I see no mirage drive, he has a paddle out in deep water, the color of that yak is in between Hobie's Ivory and Olive and the front tip of the yak appears to be a different darker color almost how Jackson does them.

Look again, it does have a mirage with fins folded. I watched this guy launch and he seemed tentative, maybe new or concerned about the surf. Hell I

Re: OK, fess up? Which BTBer is this?
Had to watch it on the Ipad my phone eyes aren't as good as they once were.... I really want to know how this happened!
Re: OK, fess up? Which BTBer is this?
How was this kayak discovered? Did he have a vhf radio? Smart phones are difficult to use when fingers are damp, much less wet. Another reason I like bright colors, that kayak is not that easy to see.
With the wind direction coming from the same direction as the swells, its hard to paddle while looking over your shoulder. I was getting quartered from behind to my right on the way in with a couple swells breaking from the wind.
Very difficult to right a Pro Angler without some sort of strap/rope to help it roll.
The more stabile the kayak, the harder it is to right it.
Could not imagine a craft such as a Scupper Pro in these conditions.
Lets say this kayaker was able to flip it back over. How was he going to get the water out? He had to have been very tired at the time of his rescue. I bring along a hand pump just in case.

Re: OK, fess up? Which BTBer is this?
I see no reason why this kayaker needs to fess up, if a member on here, he learned his lesson the hard way by being alone. So all we can do is take what we can by the report and thank goodness that he is safe. No fingers too point here.......IMHO(didn't want to hurt anybody's feelings)

No confession required or needed, but if the person who got into trouble cares to share his experiences, it might help someone in the future.
That is unless he got another kayak and went out today and had to be rescued again..............don't need to hear from that guy!

To the guy in the video....
I'm pretty sure you've read this by now. Did you recover your yak? I really want to know. I'd hate to make a $3k mistake. If it wasn't recovered maybe we can get a dive crew together if you have GPS coordinates....

Re: OK, fess up? Which BTBer is this?
Agree as well...thus the two
Re: OK, fess up? Which BTBer is this?
I agree with the spot. I have it attached to my PFD. It doesn't matter what kind of kayak!! I will take my PA over any one else. It can happen to the best of us. You know what? I have done a test with mine and filled it all up with water and still did not sink. So I am sure we all learned that PFD, buddy system and a spot or vhf will make the difference if we come home or not!!!
Re: OK, fess up? Which BTBer is this?
PA's have enough foam inside they wont sink even filled with water - per Hobie.
PA's are a bit harder to "right up" and while they don't take on a lot of water while flipped - I have learned through experience they do take on some water during the "righting process". I can easily see where 3-4 failed attempts would put enough water int he hull to become a problem.
I would really like to know how this guy found himself flipped in the first place. I have a PA 12 and have on a couple occasions had an odd large swells send me briefly surfing while on the way in (hit me in the back). Unusual - but it has happened. Otherwise I am having a hard time imaging a scenario where the PA is flipped.
I am considering actually getting another yak just for BTB because while I think the PA would be the last boat to flip...... without help it could be very difficult to do a proper recovery in turbulent waters and is very likely to take on excess water in the process. (Also - it is a good excuse to my wife so I can buy either a Revo or an adventure island).
