I'm new and some help would be appreciated!!

Post by OhNo_ItsRoman »

Hello all!! I'm not new to fishing, I'm 24 years old and between my Dad and Grandpa I've been yanking fish from the water since I could walk!! I am however new to kayak fishing. After doing some research and reading reviews, plus taking into mind my budget, I became the proud owner of an Ocean Kayak Prowler 13(I'm 5'11" 240lbs). I just recently moved from Corpus but can still get there in a little over an hour so I plan to fish there quite often. Now to get to my point!! I'd like to fish in flats until I get comfortable enough to take my kayak out to deeper waters. The problem I'm facing is I don't know where to go because I've only fished from piers. I'm not asking for any honey holes but a nice flat area where I could maybe catch a few trout it maybe a red would be nice. Any help is appreciated and thank you!!

Long Story Short: New to Kayak Fishing and looking for a flat area to help get use to things. Thanks!!

First place I can think of is called "Porno Flats" on the Portland side of the causeway. To get there from Corpus, take the first exit into Portland and get back on to bypass 35 heading back to Corpus. Take the second exit on your right, this should take you to your launch site. Drive past the last building on right, believe its now a marine repair place and park. You can fish the shallow water all the way back to Portland or venture out further and fish some oyster reefs. This should get you started. You can also take the first exit and launch at the boat ramp, its open to the public.

Thank you!! I was checking it out on a map and it looks to me like its on the opposite side of Indian Point Pier? The end of my work hitch starts next Wednesday and I think I'll be spending most of my time off looking for new fishing spots. I've always fished Laguna Madre so this is going to be new. Hope I can yank something out of the water!!

With a kayak, you will not disturb and area when you arrive like you would in a boat. If I don't get any action in 15 minutes, I leave. Sometimes I paddle until something gets my interest.

I should be out there Friday too!! It'll be my first time in a yak and I'm thinking of trying the lighthouse lakes area as well. I read somewhere that there was an advisory posted about the bacterial level in the waters again. It kind of put me on edge because I remember watching the news last year when a whole mess of people were getting seriously ill after being in the water

There used to be one of those "type" of shops located at the broken down marina. The name just stuck.

Planning on spending a day out there pretty soon after my work hitch is over. I've been reading the forums more and it sounds promising. Last two trips I had left me going home empty handed
