Off to the Pecos

Post by Aggroman »

Well fellers, plans have been in the works for a while and tomorrow we set out for a six day trip on the Pecos. We plan on dropping in at highbridge and paddling upstream this time. I'd love to do the Pandale to Highbridge but our group consists of me and my son and my buddy and his son. I didn't think the boys were quite ready for the 60 mile adventure just yet, so we're making this more of a fishing/camping trip. 2 yaks and a canoe. We'll be making a base camp at Painted Canyon (16 miles up) then running up and down from there. One day will be a trip to Lewis Canyon (about 22 miles from highbridge, and about 6 miles up river from Painted.) We'll have 4 of the major rapids to work up, then yak down on the return. If that doesn't prep them for the big trip, nothing will. :) Wish us luck and you know I might take a photo or two. Hopefully this time the water doesn't rise 33.79 feet like the last time.

Take care guys.

Of course it's hot here too AND I'm working.

I know you're picking this up telepathically. :D

Drat missed you again. I crossed the Pecos high bridge about 0900 Aug 2 on the way to Ft. Davis. Good luck and I look for the story to be published.

Well, I haven't heard back from you. Must be the canyon walls keeping your thoughts bottled up.

Hey fellers, we got back yesterday. Yes, Terry, it was hot. Not just normal hot, but hot hot. It was like an oven at Painted Canyon. The sun roasting from above, the rock baking from the bottom. We stayed in the water most the trip. But it was awesome. We had a great time and can't wait to go back...just maybe in a different month. :D I'll have photos, video, and a story to share soon. Here's a few I posted on facebook last night.

Hey Barney, glad you're getting off to some milder climates. We got to highbridge about 9:15 that morning. Just missing you.

Scott I have been camping along the Pecos for the last couple of weeks here in NM. First at Brantley lake (Carlsbad) and now near Roswell. There is only a bit of a trickle of water headed for Texas at this time. You know the style out here in the desert 40 feet wide and 1/4" deep. Glad you had safe trip.

Wish I was back down there right now. No, we never did make it up that far. We did a ton all around Painted. Fishing, hiking, swimming, etc, but we just stuck closer to base camp. It was a blast, but my gosh, it was hot. I hate to say miserable hot, but yea, it was. I wish we could have gone a different time, but we had to do it when we all could. Still an absolutely awesome time.

What is the best map for the Pecos? I still hope to put a yak in at the ramp and fish upstream a ways. It may be too late body wise but I still want to prepare in case a miracle happens.

Barney, the first 7 miles are extremely murky. Very silty. Then it turns into a turkey gravy color for a mile or so. But after that, man oh man, it clears up and it's gin clear waters all the way up. Here's a map I made for this trip...https://drive.google.com/open?id=1xAenY ... sp=sharing" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. I will warn you, depending on the day, mile 2-4 can be a nightmare if the wind is up. Even to 10-15mph. The ol' wind tunnel. It's a booger, but your yak should handle it just fine. If you can make a day trip up to mile mile 4, the scenery will not disappoint. If you pick a day, i'd love to join you if I can ever get out of work for the weekend.

Thank you Scott. The link denies access without special permission.
The information you provided is extremely helpful. I doubt my decrepit shoulders will allow the paddling needed to get far enough upstream to get to clear water. I am without a yak at the moment and trying to decide what yak I can still handle. Protect your body joints, they are critical to trying to have tooooo much fun.
