advice on the San Marcos around Luling

Camping in Luling for Labor Day. Any advice/tips for that stretch? I would also like to target some cats and gar. Never been on that stretch of river so don't wanna get skunked

All I've read about is the paddling trail in Luling. I know of a few that do well with the whiskered kitties that way.
My next adventure needs to be from Fentress to Luling. It's a long haul, need to get it in the books to complete my well overdue goal of paddling the whole river.

I have high hopes of fishing tomorrow. At the moment, work has other plans for my time. Might even have to work Sunday....
I will know for sure later today if i have to work.
