DIY Utility Trailer Rack for Two Kayaks

Post by sethmac »

Gearing up for a trip to Waco for the sandbass run, and have tired of putting the kayaks on top of the truck rack. I have a utility trailer I use for my golf cart, but often I'll need both the yaks and the cart.

Here is the solution I came up with for carrying two kayaks on the rails of the trailer. A lot friendlier on the back and if I have to, I actually can put two more of the truck rack. Happy with how it came out.

Nicely done.

I'm wondering if this could be done with aftermarket J hooks for those without access to a welder.

I think it could...I welded because I could ensure the exact length and angle to allow maximum trailer room.

I first considered using J-Hooks. Couple of concerns I had:
1) Attachment...J-Hooks typically attach perpendicular to the roof rack. The rail would be oriented the wrong way, but I was exploring just drilling down through the square tube and bolting them in place...I think it would work
2) Tilt Angle...This was actually the primary reason I welded. Most J-Hooks seem to recline just a bit too much for me to comfortable load and unload the golf cart. But I do think you could make it work.
