Flies for Tailing redfish

Post by wittich »

What is your strategy for a pod of tailing redfish? Some people recommend to cast a weighted fly like a clouser right into the middle of a group of tailing fish, but I have blown up a pod of fish that way. Some people recommend to cast at the periphery of the pod of tailing fish and hope one of them notices the fly. For me never seems to work. Lately I have had the best success with using either small popper or a deer hair slider with a long leader. I will cast past the pod and then pull the fly right through the middle of them.
As long as the fly and leader land gently you usually will get a bite.

I normally cast the lure ahead of the moving fish and let them catch up to it. Then move it so they can see it.

What he said. About the easiest scenario for sight fishing for redfish, but I don’t think there’s ever a 100% guarantee that the school won’t blow up and scatter in the commotion. Try to get it out in front of the pod and let the pod work it’s way into place. I like to pop flies up off the bottom just as the redfish comes into range if possible, but if that isn’t possible because of grass or shell, then something suspending or floating.

Literally any fly you like should work. A pod of tailing, feeding fish isn’t exactly known for picky behavior.
