New year fishing

Post by saltykat »

Got my winter vacation started new years day. Met my buddy Kyle at the launch just before day light and was greeted by light wind and thick fog that stayed with us most of day the sun tried to burn through but never did. Fishing was good lots of bites using suspending baits we caught about 25 trout to 24” and 6 reds to 24” 3 or 4 were slots. Water was cool water temp was upper 50s.

Glad to be back and away from Chicago’s winter. My first day from last winter will be hard to top.

It was a glorious first day of winter fishing. We were on a steady bite pretty much all day. I caught somewhere between 10-15 keep trout and a few that were 20-21 inches. Also caught a nice bonus redfish which was nice. I was catching on a variety of lures including the 27mr mirrodine, the soft dine, but my 2 best fish were from a corky fat boy. I really like how you can present the fat boy, but it’s much harder to fish it from the yak than the mirrodine.

I really don’t keep fish often, but the family wanted a nice fish fry to start the year! I don’t know if it’s good luck, but i caught nice slot reds December 31 and January 1st. 2023 is starting out great!

Way to go, Kyle! Your youthful and successful trips give old guys like me hope for my fishing future. But I'm looking younger lately thanks to my frozen gel Jason mask.

As soon as Shoffer gets finished with his huge lawsuit, let's go yak fishing with him, you, Saltykat and me of course... Image. Any legal fish you don't want can be dropped carefully into my soft cooler. Get some!
