Early Jan Rockport trip

Post by wittich »

Many years ago I bought a skiff. I remember taking my first fishing trip out of Cove harbor marina and seeing a kayaker launch from the same spot. I was sure I would out fish the guy with my new skiff. We happened to return around the same time. I got skunked. He had a full stringer with trout and reds.
I decided to try & recreate this trip only this time I would leave the skiff and the battery and engine troubles at home and take my old wilderness kayak out on the water. The trout I found were all stacked up on the one spot where I found bait. Red Lil john did the trick. I caught about 10-12 fish. Most of them dinks but a couple were decent sized fish.

I often see kayakers launching here while eating. Thanks for the details and ideas for fishing this location.

That's a good loop to fish. Gotta pick your days though due to boat traffic in all of those areas. Lots of good water to fish.

Good point. This was during the week and even then the boat traffic on the way in was not fun to deal with.

Thanks for the report. Estes Cove and Turtle Bayou cut to Aransas are both good winter water with lower mean water levels.

On a chart or map a long time back, I saw the island he circumnavigated called by name. Of course, I forgot it. Does anyone know the name? I assume it's still for sale, but I haven't seen the sign in a while. Most folks just assume it's part of Talley, but I did see a different name for that piece of land. TexasJim

Hi Jim,

It's actually Talley Is. Turtle Bayou was a boat cut last dredged over 100 years ago.
(both sides of Traylor Is. across Big Cut, et.al. are still Traylor Is.)

Wittich you are right a boat is great for getting you from one place to another but doesn't compare to a kayak for fishing an area once you are there.
