DIRECTIONS TO DIRTY PELICAN (DP)
approximately ~5 miles west of the 87 & 124 intersection...note:all the piers on Bolivar Peninsula no longer exist...

Sun Oil is located on bolivar peninsula (in between stingaree road and rollover pass) Theres a street thats called Los Patos Drive on google maps (This is the area we call Sun Oil...large area with no beach houses) Note: Can't access the beach taking Los Patos Dr. Coming from High Island, its about 4 miles west from rollover pass. How far is far?
When y'all say beyond the breakers, how far out are we talking. What is the maximum y'all are going out. I'm a huge SOB so I bought a pontoon boat instead of a yak...it was just more affordable than a 16' dive and fish yak. I want to know how far y'all are going out to catch ling and kings.

How far?
I'm new to anything other than wade fishing. I'm a big SOB, so rather than spend a fortune on a kayak that would fit me, I got a pontooon boat. What I'm wondering is how far out are y'all going. I hear yout alk about catching kings and ling (offshore fish) and I wonder how far out y'all paddle? Question number 2 is do you prefer to fish off the bottom with a balloon or on the bottom with a weight? If you use a balloon, how much line do you drift under the balloon?
I live on the west end of Galveston, about a couple of blocks from the Galveston Pier. Does anyone ever launch from that area and if so do you have much luck?

Just saw where the old BTB ARTICLE was previously referenced, but is no longer attached to Wolfman's post. So, here it is again - for those who may have missed it a couple of years ago.Wolfman57 wrote:Here it all is in a nice PDF package. I didn't make it, just reposting it!

Re: Essential Topics for Getting Started in BTB Fishing
I downloaded the article for future reference but it is password protected. Is it for general use? If so, I guess a password it needed. I find all the information on this sight very, very helpful and thank all the "old salts" for sharing their knowledge and experience with us new comers.

Sorry about the hassle due to my oversight. The re-posted pdf file is no longer protected.cougmantx wrote:I downloaded the article for future reference but it is password protected. Is it for general use? If so, I guess a password it needed.
Anyone who downloaded the previous file may use "TKF" to open it.

No prob; hope it is of benefit. That file was my first exercise in creating interactive pdf documents (a real learning-experience).cougmantx wrote:Thanks guy, great information there and nice job to those the put it togather! Thanks!
BTW: Each section-title (#) has an embedded clickable-link to the original TKF thread from which that section was created. Those threads contain a lot of follow-up dialog for each specific section.
Ha, I just reviewed one of the initial threads and noted where MythMan referred to himself as a "newbie... with limited experience..." in BTB fishing. That readily indicates how long ago these threads were posted...

Good stuff. Now I know why I catch so many Gafftop in good conditions in the Spring and Summer. Baits were too small. Thanks Mythman, everyone.

Re: Essential Topics for Getting Started in BTB Fishing
Here's a video of how I set up my kayak for rig trips. Trips that far out (2-6 miles) require a little more stuff, and I go about it slightly different than some folks. Feel free to ask me if you have questions, but I think this will answer a lot of the more common ones I get from new folks.
