Oldest Yak'er I Know !!!
This is for all the yak'ers that that think their old At the round-up I had told Pogo that I had some peice's from the Eskimo's of Greenland and he said he like to see them, well here they are Pogo These were bartered for in North Atlantic by my father while he was serving the USCG as CPO on the ice breaker the "Northwind" in the 60's for cartons of Pall Mall's. The Eskimo's would paddle out to the ship and trade these item's. The totem figure's are part of their religion or belief's as they would send these to their Enemies to bring bad luck and death and if you received one the only thing you could do is try to send a more powerful totem. One of the only item's i don't have is a carving of a Polar Bear witch is one of the item's they used to carve.

Too cool those are nice, I like the story as much as the totems. What kind of tusk are those three carved out of. Cool pics and even better knowing the story thanks.

Wow! Remarkable artistic ability. How long did you have to pose? And, was that one of your yaks?gerald wrote:Almost looks kind of like me sitting in the kayak....!

Very Nice .......
It's intresting the different woods that probably drifted the oceans too their shores. Very good detail on the whales teeth too. I have some ebony and ivory carvings that I picked up in Africa in the early '80s ... I would be very proud of these that you have from Greenland .. very cool.

Hey Mike, THANKS for the follow-up -- TOO COOL!! I'd forgotten all about that conversation, but whaddya expect of the third oldest kayaker known to Creation (I never mentioned any other names, like Gerald and Ron)?
I had seen and heard a discussion of some similar stuff a while back, got a wild hair, and carved a few things of my own since I was building a real Inuit-esque boat at the time and was really thinking along those lines a lot. I'll have to get some pics of the things I made, they were pretty neat and actually pretty easy and fun to do with scrap pieces and a Dremel tool.

Very cool, I'm guessing that is a clubbed seal on the back of the yak and not a rubber hatch. But what is the bowl on the bow?

Yes,that's a seal on the rear and that is a fish basket in front. Not sure what to think of the white animal skin behind him,i think it might be a fluid reservoir because i think they dried animal skins to keep water in. Pogo watch out who you send those to
