Knife sheath for yak

Post by bowgarguide »

I carry a knife on my pfd ,but I also wanted one attached to the yak that was accessible with both hands. I hate snaps and fasteners on sheaths ,when you need one fast in an emergency
I don't want to be fumbling with a catch. I went back a few years to a design we used in Asia.
Take a one by and some plywood the same thickness as the blade on the knife.
trace the outline of the blade on both and cut out the shape in the thin wood.

I had some magnets laying around so I used them . Drilled hole just deep enough for the magnets to be flush with the top of the board

Image

glued them in

then attached the ply around the blade nd glued it

Then glued a short piece over that
Image

cut and shaped the sheath

Image

mounted in the boat

The knife is safe edges covered accessible with both hands and the magnets hold it secure

Nicely done Ron! A sharp knife in the right place at the right time is invaluable. You'll be using that guy.

Very cool! :D (I also heartily recommend all paddlers keep a knife handy for emergencies that can pop up in a variety of forms.)

Ron, what's the make and model of that machete you recommend again?
