I lost my wedding ring, glasses, hat, we both lost our mirage drives....broke 3 rods, lost 2 knives, 2 pairs of pliers......and everything was tied down!

Wow, that's a tough one! Kudos for keeping after it, but it was certainly an expensive day for many of us. Sorry to hear you lost so much stuff. Maybe your next hundred trips will feature flat surf and low winds. You certainly deserve some good fortune after a day like that.

Re: My epicly failed Bluewater Classic compilation
ouch....with waves that high and a period that low you have to keep that yak moving and perpendicular...drifting in the break zone will get you flipped everytime
Re: My epicly failed Bluewater Classic compilation
Man that water is comparable to what we had at the meetup a few weeks ago.. it took 2 hours to get to the rigs and I even got motion sickness which is ultra rare... Glad you guys made it out ok and hopefully everyone learned something from mother nature that day haha

I was playing in the breakers for a bit because our radios weren't working properly. Didn't want to get out there by myself. And by the time we lost our mirage drives....pretty much screwed to get enough speed to beat the swells.

Dayumm..glad that you're ok. The revo is a good kayak to punch thru those wave.maybe next time when you're paddling try to use your paddle to see if you can touch the bottom.if you can't touch the bottom with your paddle than use the drive to break thru the wave and use you paddle to help you keep straight..

Oh.....and don't trust the mirage drive leash at ALL. We have 2010 and 2012 Revos. the belt clip just popped right off. Next time it will definitely be popped in or tied down with 300 lb test line.
Re: My epicly failed Bluewater Classic compilation
Wow I'm glad I decided not to drive out there. If I did I would have probably been in the same boat as you.

yeah using your paddle as a side rudder gives additional stability in the rough surfPhuKing wrote:Dayumm..glad that you're ok. Yea I used my paddle as a side rudder as well. Soaked boat along with 4-5 ft swells with no speed = toast.

Paddle/Peddle more, film less...If its any consolation, we decided to go catch smaller fish and a light beer buzz on the bay side. It was too rough to attempt for us. However, this decision was made only after i ran in there and helped several others with their lost cargo only to later realize my wallet and iPhone were still in my pocket!!!!!
If anyone out there is interested in a paper weight that looks remarkably like an iPhone 6plus, I would welcome any offers

Best list of list items ever.
My sun glasses came off my face and I had to swim for them. Thankful I got them back. Maybe work on a better tether? I'm going to replace my paracord with some plastic coated steel wire when I get around to it. When I flipped something wrapped my legs.....I think it was my mirage drive tether. Not too sure. It was a easy escape. Staying 100% calm is a must in surf like that.

Thanks for sharing, yackattack. Your video shows a nice paddler's perspective of some of those "ah, shoot" moments. Sorry to hear you and your buddy lost and damaged some gear. Surf conditions like those you experienced that day are definitely intimidating, but the only way to get through is to paddle for all you are worth and maintain forward momentum at all costs. That is easier said than done, especially when you see a flat wall of water taller than your head bearing down on your bow and just starting to break. If a breaker stops your forward movement or, worse, begins to move you back toward the beach, it's all over but the spluttering. Go over the little ones and duck into the larger ones...but, no matter what, KEEP PULLING HARD.
I know your next trip BTB will be in better conditions, and perhaps you'll have the chance to practice a little without rods, tackle, etc. on-board before you set out again geared up. Good luck and stick with it!
