Annual Spring Break Open Invite March 9-14
Annual Spring Break Open Invite March 9-14
I am going to do something different this year and we will stay at Caddo Lake State Park March 9 through 14. Those who can only make a few days may come and go according to their schedules. That will allow us to paddle the lake from multiple entry points, the Big Cypress Bayou from Jefferson or day tour local sites of interest to some.
Reservations need be made quickly as they will fill fast. Tents sites have 15'x15' pads and tent(s) must fit the pad. MILRET and I have made our reservations in the water only campsites. Besides tents pop ups and trailers 20' and under may be parked at those sites, no generators between 10 pm and 7 am.
Until the last 72 hours reservations may be cancelled for a $5.00 administrative fee.
Everyone is invited, but I would recommend making reservations very quickly.

I have been wanting to do this area for a long time. Think it will be a very interesting and educational trip. Will be able to use my new Pentax WG3 Orange camera. Bringing my 10 ft vapor on this one.

I have not been up there since I use to rent cabins as a college student...well never mind the rest, LOL.milret wrote:I have been wanting to do this area for a long time. Whoo-hoo! Reservations made, Paul! Thanks for putting this all together. I've wanted to go up and paddle Caddo again for years! I'm really liking the idea of camping in one place this whole trip and doing the daily excursions -- and maybe just taking my woodie this time to thoroughly enjoy the pleasant paddling offered!!!

It is one of the few places in the state you can get a chain pickerel.

Around the end of February we can get a head count and start consolidating. We can give some sites to others who were too late and then turn back any not used. I will then provide the park names and ask them to co-locate us as much as possible. For now please hold the reservations even if you do co-locate. The fee to cancel is $5.00 now or March.

Me, oh end of Feb headcount. Oh well I am a go go go.
Re: Annual Spring Break Open Invite March 9-14
I figure that around then we can consolidate, offer any unused sites to members here, then turn any unneeded sites back. I would like adjacent sites if they can swing it.

Historic averages have been lows mid-40s and highs upper 60s.

I like this plan. I am not sure if I can make the campout but will make some of the Kayak adventures. Great chance to meet other kayakers and learn how to catch fish and see some great scenery. As mentioned on another thread there is also primitive camping available in the adjoining Caddo Lake WMA for people with either an APH or LPU permit from Texas Parks and Wildlife. If the State Park gets too booked a group could stay out there.

Not sure if I can make it or not yet, but going to start thinking about it.
Has anyone heard any recent reports from Caddo? Seems like I heard someone make a trip out there a few months ago, and they had real difficulty with getting through the plant overgrowth and low water levels there or something like that.
I hear a GPS is handy to keep from getting lost in the trails. I've never kayaked there, but did visit there once and took a steamboat ride, very pretty area. Going to see if I can fit it in.
p.s. Are you planning 5 nights (leave on the 14th) or 6 nights (stay the night of the 14th, leave the 15th)?

Re: Annual Spring Break Open Invite March 9-14
Arrive Sunday afternoon March 9 and depart Friday March 14 for 5 nights. Hope to see you there.
Re: Annual Spring Break Open Invite March 9-14
Sounds like fun. I went ahead and made reservations. At only $10/night for water-only sites, that's not much to risk if for some reason I can't get off work then.
I've been amazed at how few mosquitoes have bothered me on our Brazos and Colorado River campouts, but I'm wondering if they might be more of a problem at Caddo lake?

Up until the last 72 hours you can cancel for a $5.00 administrative fee.
At the end of winter, and especially a cold one the mosquitoes should be at their low point. But I would always be prepared.
