Re: Marsh blast and cast

Ha. I used to really hate those things too  , but even when I was at my spread on Sunday morning I was watching the gulls and terns work about a half mile away and considered scrapping the duck hunt to go chase tails instead. Honestly, I probably only stayed put as long as I did because it was...

Re: Marsh blast and cast

I had a blast fighting it. My previous best was only 21". Fortunately I was in a channel and able to walk it as needed. I think in more open water it would have spooled me. My guess is I had only 50 yards of line, and 10# mono isn't good for sleigh rides.

Re: Thoughts on on-the-water eats –

For a longer outing it's 2 PB&J sandwiches, and a granola bar. Water bottles and Monster. Short trip, banana and water. When I duck hunt instead of PB&J I bring sardines and crackers. If it's REALLY cold I bring a thermos of coffee. There was one trip when I finished off my water early and t...

Marsh blast and cast

Only saw a few teal and some mergansers. Fishing was a lot better. Let some outta-slot reds go (31", 29", 16"), kept a couple of trout. The birds told me where the reds were, and the trout were spooking menhaden. Caught most on morning glory cocahoe on 3/8 Mirrolure. Also landed a 35&...

Nice photos, those are beautiful animals. Did the volunteer give any idea on their chances for survival?

I've only ever seen one sea turtle while out paddling, and it was very brief.

Re: New hunting blind for Kayak

I use cheap camo netting. It's light and I can roll it up small. Sometimes I pull the yak into the grass/mud and hunt out of it. Other times I might want to paddle to a spot, but then leave the yak behind and walk a ways. In that case I can hide the yak and use my camo netting elsewhere. One nice th...

Re: A Tiki Island lights canal to revisit –

Yes, you can fish there, there just isn't much upside to calling him on it. I remember a couple of years ago a report came out that said in the USA 1 in 4 women, and 1 in 6 men, took medication to treat a psychological or behavioral disorder. There's a lot of people on edge, and being in a kayak put...

East Matagorda duck 1/25

Took the yak out today- Wednesday 1/25. Set out 20 decoys, mostly teal. Very little wind, and the mosquitoes were very thick. Good thing I had my mosquito net or I'd have swallowed a bunch of them. Got a greenwing right after shooting time. Then missed a couple. Dead after that til about 815am when ...

Re: Brazoria wildlife refuge

Cruisin Cuda is 100% right. Except you'll also get folks walking around AFTER shooting time. When I used to hunt it, before they opened up the east side, I'd see a game warden just about every time. Never much of a big deal, though they will snoop around looking for any lead shot. SO, if you have so...

Re: Paddle Tail soft plastics

Good ole Morning Glory H&H Cocahoe (as far as I know all morning glory have the chartreuse tail, but maybe that's not the case). Seems like if the bite isn't there, I can put that plastic on just a plain grey jighead, and within a few casts the skunk is over :) . That's my confidence lure, for s...

Re: Fishing For Huge Rare Predatory Fish In The Rain

I'm seeing bigger alligator gar. The longnose I see, too, but much smaller. Depending on time of year I know spots where you could catch gar after gar up to 5' definitely. I see AG over 6'+ when I hunt Colorado and the Trinity. Haha, now that I think about it I could name two creeks where I see huge...

Cordgrass. Lots of it. It was all around that big island in the NE corner of the pass. Don't know the name of it. Anyway, I would imagine it was also that way on the Cold Pass side. Good news is aside from the cordgrass sheets the water was clear, bait was everywhere, and the habitat seemed real hea...

SLP 09/28/16

Hit bay side at SLP with good tide movement. Tons of baitfish being harassed on top, but also lots of dead grass moving low. Caught a dozen- mix of small reds, black drum, and croaker. Really wanted to work tandem Gulp mullet along the bottom, but there weren't a lot of clean stretches of sand or mu...

How rare are they? They're beautiful fish, and can put up a helluva fight, but there are many times I have to switch up spots because the alligator gar are so plentiful.

You really PADDLED that, or you pedaled/paddled? If you paddled all that way you did something a couple of notches above a TX Slam!

Yeah, 15 teal in the freezer would be nice. I hit freshwater marsh this opener. Years ago my dad had leases with rice fields in Eagle Lake and East Bernard, and they were always swarming during teal season, at least the first few days. I'll probably hit around Eagle Lake this coming weekend. Pressur...

Re: Teal Sightings 2016

Went opening day. Had 2 fly over from behind around 8am, no shot. Around 845am one landed in the decoys, shot it. Saw 2 flying way out while picking up decoys at 930am. SAW 5 ducks total, that was IT :? Didn't bother going out Sunday.

Did pick up some gar and catfish on the way in :)

What areas do you look for when it come to flounder gigging? Prefer sandy bottom, not too much mud, not too much shell. Winds under 10 mph. Seems to me when there's a lot of moonlight, the flounder move around more, whereas on other nights they stay pat more. I'm in Friendswood, and don't like to d...

I steamed the 2 crabs, and picked out the meat to weigh. Very surprisingly, it was 16 full ounces

Got about 5.5# of meat from the 20 boneless, skinless flounder filets, which is about what I expected.

Flounder gigging 9/8/16

I've been wanting to get back out and gig for so long, but I've had truck problems, then the nights I COULD go the winds were stronger than I like. Finally got to go early this A.M. Usually I take a single, barb-less gig. My dad left his smaller, 3-prong, barbed gig at my house last time, so I decid...

Re: Where to teal hunt?

I usually hunt public land, along the gulf coast.

I'll walk out to a pond on a refuge, or paddle to a spot on a river and set up, or go out into the marsh.
